Are you sure you're interpreting the data correctly? Free RAM +/- buffers, cache, and all that?

My Cassandra needs about 245 MB in normal use....

Number one on the list would be beagle. Its indexation is resource hungry and it makes a huge difference when you run the liveCD with less than 512MB.
