[SOLVED]running firefox 3.6.... why?!?!

Postby piquat on Wed Feb 09, 2011 11:20 am

I looked at the launcher icon for firefox when I started my computer this morning, and it's blue.

I'm apparently running version 3.6, code named Namoroka. Appears to be still in beta.

The only change I can think of that has anything to do with Firefox was the addition of a ppa for smooth resizing of images, which I couldn't get to work anyway.

My sources.list:

Code: Select all
~ $ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ julia main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ maverick partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ maverick free non-free

# deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu maverick-getdeb apps
deb http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu maverick-getdeb games
deb http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/repository karmic/
# deb-src http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/repository karmic/
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/firefox-smooth-scaling/ppa/ubuntu maverick main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/firefox-smooth-scaling/ppa/ubuntu maverick main

Those last two were the ones I added. Somehow I doubt it had anything to do with that because I don't think a launchpad ppa would be distributing firefox.

Looking in Synaptic history I see this:
Code: Select all
Commit Log for Tue Feb  8 09:57:39 2011

Upgraded the following packages:
firefox (3.6.13+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1) to 3.6.13+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1+thjaeger2
firefox-branding (3.6.13+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1) to 3.6.13+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1+thjaeger2
firefox-gnome-support (3.6.13+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1) to 3.6.13+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.10.10.1+thjaeger2
mintupdate (4.2.0) to 4.2.1

While trying to get that ppa to work I did a:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get upgrade

Is that what this stems from?

I have this setup remastersys'd. It wouldn't be hard to redo it, but I'd like to know what I did wrong so this doesn't happen again.

Thanks in advance.

Update the Win7 machine and it's on the same version but calls itself Firefox instead of the project name Namoroka.

Is this maybe some issue with branding? Right version, wrong branding?

3.6.13 is the current Firefox. Where does it say it is a beta? It was released back in December. FF4 is the latest beta.

I just googled Namoroka. I see now that those articles were old.

HOWEVER, my title bar says Namoroka, not firefox.

So this is just a branding issue and I have the correct version now?

Side note: Full screen flash works great now!

Did you check the PPA? What you installed is a modded version of FF

https://launchpad.net/~firefox-smooth-s ... /+packages

trying to address this bug

Ooooooohhhhhh, now I get what I did! I was expecting some type of plugin or script to download and run to make a change to my CURRENT browser.

I didn't realize it was an entire other browser modded to fix that problem.

Well, my pixelation problems are fixed AND flash runs much smoother.

To me it appears that I should leave well enough alone...?

Thanks by the way, I doubt I would have made that leap of logic.

Edit: Yes, I checked that PPA page, but I guess I just didn't understand what I was looking at. Much clearer now.

Heh, nah, if it were messed up people would be screaming by now. :) I feel safe, and that's all that counts now-a-days.
