I have a suggestion if anyones interested (network)

Hi,

my first post. i run mint 9 light for a laptop i have which is very nice it browses good and me and the gf use the office software, tbh if it wasn’t for the lack of steam support id get rid of windows for my high end gaming rig too.

anyway, my point which im not making very quickly.

I like many others have an unstable internet connection, for many hours even most days where im actually using the connection its fine but often a phone call or a left message on voicemail, even making a call on the phone can cut the internet. You cannot even on a stable internet connection guarantee that you will always have internet access but when your pages start to slow and the connection seems to freeze when browsing linux mint and ubuntu your unable to recognise this as the icon does only display network connectivity to the router and not the internet (*please do correct me if im wrong as im not able to spot it)

on windows you have a yellow warning triangle over the connection which points out that although you have a connection to your whole network the internet gateway is not responding, so you know that its not your network kit that’s at fault or mint, or the adapter its actually the broadband.

again, if its already there then i do apologies but i think a small coloured exclamation mark would be nice, or perhaps an earth, web icon?

cheers and Hi ! :D :D :D

looking forward to mint 11 as im running ubuntu 11 beta on an old machine and its really nice.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

sorry i dont know your location/network [but if not uk it wouldn't help]

im actually using the connection its fine but often a phone call or a left message on voicemail, even making a call on the phone can cut the internet.

My imitate thought is Are you on an ADSL line [not cable] if so do you have filter/splitters [to separate the Analogue signal from the Digital system]between each piece of telephony equipment and one on your router connection ?

if so how old are they [most have an average life of 4 years but i have known them fail after 2 to 3 yrs so they may need changing

hi,

sorry I must of confused people, it wasn’t my intention to ask for help on my broadband connection.

I was highlighting that millions (i do not exaggerate) of people suffer from intermittent broadband, this is usually if a problem exists (however small) on the line OR there is a bandwidth cap on the contract the provider will stop your data flow/response to exchange momentary in some cases this can present as a lack of communication from the other side and the router wont connect to the external IP.

My idea is to add like windows 7, a yellow triangle or other " ! " icon to show the user that while ALL home network kit is functioning fine and the wireless or lan is connected to the home router, it is hard to immediatly see that its actually the internet that is not functioning where as on windows 7 you are alerted to this.

im sorry if this is posted in the wrong section.

just for info i am 4 miles from the exchange and this wont change unless i move (at least 3 years or more), my master socket is new, my ends are punched again at the junction box. everything BT (yes im in the uk) can do is done apart from the main line infrastructure to the next village and from that village to the town exchange is old and the distance is far, i will never get fibre or 20 meg for at least another 5 to 7 years perhaps more. so you see my 4meg connection is all i have and it isnt always stable.

hence me and many other people can tell imediatley when there is an internet problem, in fact as i mentioned even if you have a 100% internet connection then one day the exchange could be down and you would think it was your own hardware without the mini icon to tell you that you are connected fine to your home router but not to the internet.

a simple but usefull feature :)
