Cause it's cool ?

Actually I think the reasons for this are well documented. Clem ... the guy who started Mint has a thing for exotic women ... Who doesn't like hot Russian girls ? Kidding round, well not about that last part. For real ... who doesn't like hawt russian girls ? Hmmm, though this could also be the actual reasoning behind the Mint release name mystery too.

Will be a good idea to add an adjective then ... Say Pretty Julia :D like they do with Ubuntu

lol ... wouldn't hurt my feelins. You'll have to run it by Mint HQ. They probably have a suggestion box around here somewhere. ;)

I'm sure many people have alternative pet names for their Linux/Mint installs anyway. Sumtimes I like to coo n babytalk to mine. Who's a good widdle winix, you are .... oooo you are, yesssss you are. Doesn't seem to mind. At least they haven't refused to boot up yet from it.

lol.

They all end in the letter "a" too.

The mystery deepens, lol.

How many guys would be attracted to the distro if the names were Adam, Bill, Clint, Dan, Ed, etc?

Well OK, maybe a few, but not the majority of us.

I like the sexy female names. What's going to happen when we run out of letters of the alphabet?

Restart / reboot with a new - and younger  - generation, I guess.

Being from NC (USA)... AKA part of Hurricane Alley, traditionally we name hurricanes with women's names (until recently) because they can be unpredictable ;)

Linux Mint uses women's names because it seemed like a better naming convention than mythical animals like Ubuntu uses. Guys used to give a faithful car they really liked a women's name back in the day, I think it's something along those lines. :)

I don't even know what an 'Ocelot' is. And 'Oneiric' is as far as I know not an existing English word but a Greek word (ονειρος/ονειρον dream) made English by Mark Shuttleworth.

At least I know what Narwhal and Meerkat mean, but Maverick... I'll have to look it up somewhere.

And almost everyone knows the names Helena, Julia and Katya (I know it as Katja which is Dutch spelling).

Just 'cause... From Google, definitions:

o·nei·ric/ōˈnīrik/
Adjective: Of or relating to dreams or dreaming.

mav·er·ick/ˈmav(ə)rik/
Adjective: Unorthodox.
Noun: An unorthodox or independent-minded person.

oc·e·lot/ˈäsəˌlät/
Noun: A medium-sized wild cat (Felis pardalis, family Felidae) that has a tawny yellow coat marked with black blotches and spots. It ranges from southern Texas through South America.

Hope that clarifies some things for the curious.

Because, why not?

I would never do the things I've done to my machine if it were male. LOL

My machine and I really do love each other. We have our differences, and disagreements. But we seem to do pretty well together.

We'll be hitting our 3 year anniversary soon!

I grew up on the SC coast, and the old joke was "Why are Hurricanes named after women? Because they're not HIMicanes."

Anyway...if there is a Russian influence, my pick for "N" will be Natasha, and "S" will be Svetlana.
