strange machine name on lan

Postby hairybiker on Sat Sep 17, 2011 10:01 am

I just ssh'ed into my LMDE box and noticed it was saying that I last connected using chakra.lan. Now NO machine on my lan is called chakra, so I went investigating and it appears to be my MInt 11 box that is calling itself this even though that is not its hostname.

How/why is this happening?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Did you install the Linux distro named 'Chakra' on some computer on the network?

Some routers, e.g. Thompson or Speedtouch, remember an old name of a computer and sometimes continue using that name.

Nope this is live now, it has the same ip as this machine
Code: Select all
hairybiker@duo:~$ ping duo.lan
PING duo.lan (192.168.1.66) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from chakra.lan (192.168.1.66): icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.032 ms
64 bytes from chakra.lan (192.168.1.66): icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=0.051 ms
64 bytes from chakra.lan (192.168.1.66): icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=0.047 ms
64 bytes from chakra.lan (192.168.1.66): icmp_req=4 ttl=64 time=0.047 ms
^C
--- duo.lan ping statistics ---
4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3003ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.032/0.044/0.051/0.008 ms

hairybiker@duo:~$ hostname
duo

hairybiker@duo:~$ ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr <removed>
          inet addr:192.168.1.66  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

So I have no idea where this is coming from, this is a fresh install of Mint 11.
Only other active machine on the lan is the LMDE one.

The router shows it as duo active not chakra.

If it's a wireless network then looks like someone is on your network.
