ram/performance question

Post by truexfan81 »

ok current hardware 2.9ghz dual core with 2GB DDR2 667, Geforec 9500GT 512mb graphics

running mint 9 main x64
ok mobo only has 2 slots for ram, i will be replacing them with 4GB of DDR2 800. Will i see a noticeable increase in performance after the upgrade? i mean it already seems fast after having used winxp for years, but will it impress me yet again?

thanks

Yes, there will be an increase in performance, definitely, when you are multitasking and have multiple applications open. It's also going to help if you want to run VirtualBox with a guest OS on it. 4GB is perfect for a 64bit OS; it's going to allow you to utilize the memory better.

Additionally, or even right now, you could install Ailurus, follow the tweaking to get it to work with Mint 11 here: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 55#p432678 and then set Settings/Memory to 10% and you'll likely notice an improvement.

i just upgraded my ram from 512 to a gig and a half and it seems like a brand new machine running mint, i also reduced my swap size to 10. its running 100% better since i put the extra stick of ram in it.
