Disappointed in Mint 11 on my new laptop

I've got Linux Mint 11 32bit running on an old Dell, Toshiba 10" and it runs great. I got a new HP 8460p and installed Mint 11 32 bit on it. Having a lot of issues with Mint on this PC. Many times my video will just go black. Crtl, alt,Backspace will not bring it back. I have to shutoff the PC  Doing a Crtl, alt,Backspace while the display is active will also make the screen go black and then I have to shutoff the PC.

My next problem is the applets in my bottom tray. They come and go. Sometimes I get an error on boot asking if I want to delete the conflicting applet or go on. This is very annoying.

I sure wish this PC would run like my little Toshiba NB305. This PC just runs flawless on Linux Mint 11

Off my soapbox ;)

screen just goes black? is the screen going in power save mode and wont come out or is it something else?

as for the applets giving an error "yadda yadda applet failed to load do you want to delete?" what I do is hit don't delete then just open up terminal and run

killall gnome-panel

and panel restarts, and with it the applet that had the malfunction shows back up (i have to do this on about every 3rd reboot on avg)

Haven't had the Black Screen of Death lately :) I did setup a command file on my desktop to run killall gnome-panel. Works great. Thanks!

My HP laptop hasn't done the black screen for days? Must have healed itself :D Sure wish they would fix the panel error though :|

Why don't you just install a different panel? Lxpanel, what I use, is very functional and easy to use. Tint-2 is lightweight and functional, I have read, and Cairo-dock seems to be very popular. And there is xfce4, etc, etc. Linux is all about choice.

Here is a picture where I have Gnome panel on the right monitor and a LXDE panel on the left monitor in a 2 monitor set-up:
