Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I think Gloria is no longer supported. I believe support stopped around the end of 2010. Mint 9 "Isadora" is the latest LTS version.

I would definitely try a newer release. I use 11 and love it, even if 12 is the newest. Using an old, no-longer-supported version isn't fair to the distro and isn't really a good reflection of where Mint has made it, or where Linux has made it, in general. Try some of the newer releases, you'll probably have better luck (and much more support!).
