I would definitely try a newer release. I use 11 and love it, even if 12 is the newest. Using an old, no-longer-supported version isn't fair to the distro and isn't really a good reflection of where Mint has made it, or where Linux has made it, in general. Try some of the newer releases, you'll probably have better luck (and much more support!).
