Postby CWM303 on Sun Jun 17, 2012 6:56 pm

Hello,

I am running a DELL OPTIPLEX GX280 512 ram ... I am wondering will Mate run on it?

If not what would? I am tried ubuntu xfce ran sort of ok.. But im trying to get away from the buntus dont like where its going with that UNITY CRAP.... Not all of us have nice computers!

Thanks,

Debian Squeeze is for you my friend. Uses around 140MB idle RAM on Gnome, and around 65MB on Openbox.
Debian Squeeze still uses Gnome 2.xx so it's almost similar to MATE (even better IMHO). Check it out.
http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable

If you want a window manager instead of a desktop environment like Gnome, you can check out Crunchbang.
(This distro is what I use, ever since the Gnome retards forced the epic-fail Gnome 3.xx onto users. Idle 66MB RAM.)

If your system is 32-bit, you would use this link: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0 ... 6-CD-1.iso
And is your system is 64-bit, you would use this link: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0 ... 4-CD-1.iso

I heard DEBIAN was a rolling release so id never have to reformat.

Well, SEMI-rolling. LMDE is using Debian Wheezy (which is using the testing repositories. When it becomes stable sometimes in 2013, Debian Squeeze will become obsolete and Debian Wheezy will become the new stable version). If you prefer stability and reliability over cutting-edge software, you would get the Debian Squeeze version (this is the version I pointed you to, although you are free to do whatever you want: you can get Debian Wheezy if you wish). PS, Debian Squeeze uses significantly less RAM than Wheezy.

Also, I don't like LMDE much since it uses Gnome 3 and I personally like Gnome 2 a LOT LOT better. LMDE will "run" on your system, but it wont be much comfortable. (My college has Dell GX280s just like yours, so I know first-hand lol).

Bottom line:
1. If you want a nice looking desktop environment, go with Gnome (around 140MB idle), Xfce (I don't know how much lower RAM it uses, but its lesser than Gnome), or LXDE (uses like 100MB idle). Note: KDE on your machine will probably blow it up (joking, but you get the idea); uses around 500MB RAM idle.
2. If you want a nice looking window manager, go with Openbox (Crunchbang is a well known Openbox WM Debian distro. Uses around 65MB idle); you may also like Fluxbox (around the same idle RAM usage as openbox).
3. Definitely go with Debian and ditch the Ubuntus for that old of a computer.

Linux Mint 13 MATE LTS and LMDE with MATE runs with 512MB of RAM and should be faster than Unity but slower than XFCE.

LMDE with XFCE is a good option and Mint 13 XFCE LTS should arrive soon.

Mint 13 LXDE was cancelled but you can use Mint 12 LXDE (works with 256MB of RAM), take a look at this topic to speed it up: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=96465

I just watched a review on Debian.. and I read that its not a good distro for noobs.. I mean I know the APT GETS and UPGRADE and DIST UPGRADE and PURGE commands.... I am ok with Ubuntu so I really shouldnt have any problems with Debian I dont think....

Go for it! Don't be scared of Debian! I was once scared of it too until I found it's (almost) the exact same $#$%ing thing as Ubuntu!
By the way, Debian is the mother of both Ubuntu and Mint, so yeah...

Let us know of your decision :D

Hmm, you must have selected the text-install. You should select the graphical install, it has gotten much better over the years (it used to be text-only).
