Best Linux Mini computer.

Postby Garvan on Sun Aug 12, 2012 6:22 am

The battery on my Hp-Mini stop working, and wondered if I should replace the computer or the battery. I found a Toshiba I liked, a Toshiba NB510, but when I looked up the specks, the Graphics processor looks like it might be an issue, its GMA 3650,

GMA 3600 on Linux
Since some version 3.3 there is rudimentary experimental support in mainline kernel through CONFIG_DRM_GMA500 and CONFIG_DRM_GMA3600. 2D and 3D acceleration are not yet supported by the FOSS driver. There are proprietary solutions in MeeGo and Yocto that are not easily portable to most other distributions.

This looks worrying and my searches for solutions at Ubuntu did not reassure me that good solutions were available.

So what is the best Linux compatible mini available?

Don't buy a GMA 3650 (or 3600, 600 or 500), it is not supported on Linux Mint. See: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=105091

Sorry, can't help you with suggesting a best mini. I'd start by looking at vendors that sell computers with Linux installed: http://linuxpreloaded.com/

Which version did you get? I saw some new HP-Mini's so I was just thinking of getting the same. It's $60 for a battery (which I still have not been able to get) and $300 for a new computer. We will see.

110 ... IIRC ... that was a couple years ago ... don't know that they've changed much, though?!

I'm a tablet guy, now! ... wife confiscated the Mini!

FWIW, I just tried VNC last nite from my tablet to the mini ... worked remarkably well!

Now I'm threatening to build a mini-ITX 3.1ghz i3 4gb DDR3 128gb SSD ... I'll load Mint if I think a Myth install won't hurt much ... otherwise probly Mythbuntu ... then use VNC like a remote control ... or for when the tablet's browser can't hack it!

I must recheck the spec of the Toshiba NB510 computer I saw in the shop last week. I wrote down the it had a GMA 3650, but when I checked on the Internet it has a GMA 3150. The GMA 3150 video drivers look okay for Linux.

I am still unable to find a replacement battery for my HP-Mini where I live.

UPDATE:
I re-checked the Toshiba NB510 and the spec sheet at the shop said it had a GMA 3650 video adapter so I was afraid to by it. The GMA3650 does not work properly with Linux Mint.

I still could not get a replacement battery, so I bought a Samsung N148 Plus. I am setting it up now, and have had no problems so far.
