For my computer I use Arch Linux and am very happy with it. Recently though someone asked what disto they should use to go into linux. Normally my go-to answer was Ubuntu. But I remembered mint and I thought about it and I could not get a good reason to use one over the other, except ubuntu is more upstream (which is a minor thing). This person has used unity before and is perfectly happy with it. Convince me why they should use mint over ubuntu.

LOL, you need marketing type of a man to say it to you. But if i have to answer it, even though i don't want.... Mint is better because have all drivers, flash, codecs, java, build in and doesn't have unity. Short ball

PS. i really don't like this question, you have to use it, and if you like it, then you'll find reasons to recommend it further, that's how it goes, at least it should.

you need to recommend mint 13 with gnome-shell simply because mint is the most user fiendly distribution on the market and they are not afraid to put proprietary software inside.
