Mint forums - Special character in Subject - error on save

Post by anandrkris »

Hi,
I tried including a special character beta (to say that KDE 4.11 beta is out) in forum title and got the below error.
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysql4 ]

Incorrect string value: '\xF0\x9D\x9B\x83 r...' for column 'topic_title' at row 1 [1366]

An SQL error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact the Board Administrator if this problem persists.
Is this a known bug / limitation? Just thought would report it.

Also,GNOME Character Map is not installed along with Cinnamon? I installed Cinnamon on top of KDE, perhaps that why it is not packaged.

Testing 1 2 3: β

Seems to work fine here, even in the subject. How did you type the character, or from where did you copy it?

The problem is two-fold: First, the code you have entered and which the forum tries to insert is for "Mathematical beta", not "Greek beta". Second, this is a 4-byte UTF-8 code (the Greek beta is 2-byte). Apparently the forum software is using an old version of MySQL (5.1 or older) which cannot handle 4-byte UTF-8 codes.

Try to get hold of a Greek beta somewhere and use that, this should work
