Laptop Notebook for Linux Mint?

Post by MintBatman »

Hi,

I am using mint on my Desktop. It can do what I need it to do. Basically I just need it to run calculations used in biology. These sorts of packages.

I am interested in getting a notebook / laptop for portable workloads. I am not looking to play games on it. I don't want to pay for Windows 8 preinstalled and I would like it free of an OS.

Would this give me more money to play with in terms of hardware if I do it this way? Or is it simply better to get any good Windows 8 laptop and just install Mint.

I need some advice and ideas please.

Thanks

If you'l buy a laptop with Win pre-installed on it, you'll pay for the license. You should buy a laptop with no OS on it, or something open source, like FreeDOS, then, you'll just pay for the hardware. Also, you should consider choosing one with a good battery life, because Linux is not as power-wise on laptops as Windows is.
Hope it helps.

I personally don't like the Idea of paying M$ money to wipe windows off of a HDD, but sometimes there aren't many other options.. :( What kind of specs are you looking to get with the laptop? I know amazon has some laptops with an odd form of Linux on them, but I don't think they are very powerful or anything. You might want to take a look at System76 laptops depending on your budget and need in terms of specs. They make some nice laptops! They come pre-installed with Ubuntu, but I don't think it would be hard to run Linux Mint on one.

Here is the link if you are interested: https://system76.com/laptops/

The best deals will often be a windows notebook on sale
--All the brand names have sales every so oftem (Dell, Toshiba Sony, Lenevo ) + te newer brands Asus, Corsair, Acer and so on

And the online web sites that have those deals..

So if it was me, I would find a good priced notebook with a reasonable amount of RAM
  • I don't think the hard drive store is a big issue, it doesn't have to be humongus (like the ultrabooks try to emphasize..)
--and go for it..
{only remember to check the parts/components for hardware support under Linux..}
http://linux-laptop.net/
--a site that shows you experience of Linux on these notebook brands..

You can get an idea by looking at Linux OS supplied notebook sites
http://emperorlinux.com/
--often pricier but well-selected..

--I don't know if a cloud or a netbook style computer would work for you, but it is also an option
