So I've put a bit of time organising my Mint desktop after getting by for a year or so.
There's some great 'Spices' out there. I'm much happier now than I was before I did all this.
Great apps:
- Albert - a quick launch utility. I've got it bound to Ctrl+Enter (the keys at the bottom corners of my keyboard, so easy to hit instinctively).
Great applets:
- Window List With App Grouping - much better for my needs than the simplistic window list that is the default for Cinnamon.
- System Tray Collapsible - seems better than the default system tray for Cinnamon.
- GPaste 2 - paste history; this is one of those things that seems useless until you need it.
- Places Centre - a quick launcher for all your places; your disks and bookmarked folders
Worthy mentions:
- Cairo Dock - a great dock although I've not found a good way yet to combine it with my Mint desktop.
