Just a quick Hello

Post by owen1978 »

Just introducing myself to the community, finally transferred my stuff from XP and full integrated into Mint!
The PC's is still on dual boot! but have told the wife when i build my next pc, she gonna have to use Linux
she's got no choice! Ha Ha

Have tried one or two distros over the last year or so, really did like the polished feel of OpenSuse KDE 4.* but too unstable,
will wait for it too mature and but hopefully by then Mint will have its KDE version out. Fedora seemed nice too but just didnt feel
right! Ubuntu was just too damn ugly! Always heard good things about mint, so i gave it try and here i am.

Anyway i hope to learn more and hopefully contribute to the community in the future!

I thought i might summarize my trial and tribulations of moving to Mint!

1. Could not get any Linux distro to recognize XP - the reason being that my disk was set up as dynamic disk so changed disk back to basic
2. Problems running live cd's and other weird behavior! it was the damn APCI - the ACPI=off sorted that one out!
3. Learned to edit the Grub/Menu.lst in order to clean up the startup options, so theres only two options XP & Mint (got to keep it simple
for the wife) Defaults to XP in 2 secs!
4 Was getting an error message during boot, pnpbios-off sorted that one!
5. Had problems shutting down the system, it seemed to go into a hibernate state, trawled through the forums - adding apm_power=off to the
boot line and editing a file (does anyone know which file it is, for future reference?) solved that brain teaser!
6. Had to find alternatives to some of my windows apps so; Utorrent = Deluge, VMWare = Virtualbox, Itunes = Songbird
7. Couldn't find an alternative to TVU Player & i don't quite understand WINE, so created Virtual XP Machine in VBOX and installed TVU player -
works fantastic!

And thats where i am now :) currently working on one long term problem but everything else is just fine!

Thanks for all the hard work

Welcome to Mint
A quick remark

If that's literally as it is you are at risk....
You better have the Rescue mode option enabled in case something goes wrong
You can add a bunch of line breaks to keep it out of sight normally :)
