The HeliOS Project recently became involved with an East Austin Community Center called Space12. On the "wrong side of the tracks" and often un-noticed, we found that this place is trying to do good things for people that haven't really been given a chance. We began assisting Space12 last Sunday by installing the first 4 of 16 computers there. These machines will be the core of our newly built Thomas M. Edwards Technology Learning Center. http://linuxlock.blogspot.com/2009/02/h ... ology.html
Why it was named after Thomas M. Edwards can be found here. http://linuxlock.blogspot.com/2009/01/g ... tream.html
While working there, a film documentary team found out about what we were doing and made us a part of what they are doing. http://www.withinreachmovie.com/ They are biking across the US and back in search of "sustainable communities" and making a movie about their travels. Their effort is amazing and I thought you might enjoy knowing that we donated them a pretty good little laptop and that laptop runs Mint....as will the main room of the Learning Center once we pull the resources together to get it done. A project coming up in April called Linux Against Poverty should do it for us. http://geekaustin.org/2009/02/01/linux-against-poverty/
They mention Mint specifically here...and I note with a bit of satisfaction they think it's way better than Ubuntu.

Yeah for being better than what we are based on.

Hi HeliOS... I have heard about you guys... you all do commendable and noble work. Keep up the good work and thanks for giving us (at least) one more user.

No...Ryan was just a coincidental addition. Linux Mint is the "official" install of The HeliOS Project. We will put over a thousand computers out this year with Mint on it. The Space12 project is just a drop in the bucket. We've begun to put a "why is linux free" icon on the desktop, explaining how it works and that small donations to the distro authors keeps it free for everyone.
