Why I love Linux Mint

Postby sbeaber4 on Sun Dec 20, 2009 5:51 am

One late evening in Japan, bored with not much to do, I decided to toy around with Linux. After testing out some things I thought were handy with a USB install I discovered: Linux is pretty cool. However, while the best one I found was Ubuntu, I was overtaken by its inability to do much out of the box. I am referring to its lack of simple codecs. Then (don't remember where) while searching for driver help, I was referred via google to Linux Mint. After finding Linux mint I installed it to the USB and at first was satisfied with it only being a persistent live USB, i felt "this is great, this deserves a permanent place on my computer". It offers a look that is like windows to early users and is very friendly to those "crossing over". ++ for this.

Well it got an ultimate place on my computer, as I accidental erased my entire hard drive installing it. OOPS

But while I do dual boot with windows 7, I find fewer things I chose Windows over Linux for.
・I love the "super" and scroll button. My goal now is to install it on all my older family's computers so they can see with ease.
・Ditto to the make all visible text bigger/bolder. I really should wear my glasses. Lol
・The "easy" download update button. At first it was daunting, but now its simpler than in windows. No more download, install, delete. Also, my parents no longer download scamware like "driver update softwares"
・Beautiful tools like multiple workstations and the animations going between them. I just discovered super and tab. AWESOME
・The most obvious aspects on my system performance
・FREE??wow

Of course there are an ever growing laundry list to the things that make Linux Mint the best, but those are a few of my reasons. I should add I have GNOME installed on the hardrive and run XFCE on my usb and everyday I'm learning new cool tricks with LM. If it were not for my webcam not being compatible and a program or two that doesnt run well/at all with wine, it would have the entire hard drive.

Thank you creators, donors, supporters, users, and fans.
Cheers

There is only a few reasons I haven't totally abandoned Windows and it has nothing to do with Linux OS. It has to with some key apps for me: movie editors, web builders, and a decent note taker (like Evernote). Other than that, I'd be Windows free.

If you like MS office. Then Try Open Office in Linux. http://www.openoffice.org/

All of apps above are in the repositories for Linux Mint.
I do have windows to, but only because I can not get most games to work with wine.

Any other alternatives for Linux you need? Just late me know.

For me, between flickering flash and Netflix lies the only reasons I'm not windows free at my house.

I think the Update Manager in Mint is one of the best things about it for new users. It provides a "safety net" that most other distros totally lack with their all-or-nothing updaters.

I'd like to add to the list of things why i love this OS is not having to worry about viruses. yeah, it kinda bugs me that Netflix doesn't work on our Linux machines. LibreOffice is really great. a lot of great stuff. the mintube player thing is cool, among other cool stuff.

I'm pretty much 100% MS Windows free now. For Netflix you can pick up a Roku for around 50 bucks US. I've found alternatives in Linux for anything I might want to use MS for.

I'm allmost 100% on Linux Mint 12 Cinnamon now days. Only thing why I even have Windows 7 is because games. But I don't anymore much play anyway. I moved from Windows to Linux, because newer Windows philosophy just didn't allow me to do stuff the way I wanted anymore. I want to decide my self how I do stuff, not so that some company decides it behave of me. I like Linux Mint's freedom to do what ever I want, without OS preventing me. Freedom of choice. So, why pay something worst, when better is free.
