LM 10 rocksolid, just works only 1 suggestion.

Postby woodsmoke on Thu Jan 20, 2011 9:46 pm

I've been running Linux Mint Debian 10 for several weeks now.

Two things: one a cheer and other a small niggle that other distros have also and LM could fix.

a) the cheer:

I teach at a college and am presently restarting a book publishing business in which I sell downloadable .pdf. Without getting into the particulars, I've been using Kubuntu because of it's extremely tight integration with Koffice. But, Kolourpaint just collapsed some time ago and is not workable.

It is critical to part of my production of .pdfs that I produce in them a very large number of images with transparent backgrounds. Kolourpaint 4 in LM10 just works like it used to, a simple click and one has the transparent background.

The menu system is just absolutely the best I've seen very quick, snappy, you name it, flips easily between favourites all apps...does a GREAT job.

The whole system is fast, clean and gets the job done,...............

Including Bluetooth? plug in a Kensington dongle, enable bluetooth on the Android, enter the pin and you are there....

and...

The file system has a notice about sharing... and it works!!!! I mean...it ....WORKS!!

Printers were set up with no work on my part, usb found and worked with nothing on my part, clicked add printer for a parallel and it just did it, with no work.

Updates appear obviously, click 'em and go get coffee.

The one suggestion.

The pop up dvd/cd burner application has the same "problem" that other distros have with "it".

The popup box for the cd/dvd burner has a set of sentences which is confusing about burning an .iso or data.

AGAIN....this is not unique to LMD10....I have seen the same set of sentences on other distros.

K3B very simply says "this is an .iso that can be burned directly".

The text in the burner popup talks about file systems and files and for the new person what is THAT all about? :(

And MANY of the threads here are big discussions about wanting LMD to be a snap for the new person.......

WHICH IT IS!!!!

Which is why I bring up this little niggle...........to me, if it were fixed then I could see NOTHING that anyone could complain about...really... :D

Yes, the new person may not even know what an .iso is but that is not the point.

I probably have gone through two hundred .iso burns with K3B and just clicked the button and it did it.

Now ya gotta remember folks........the ol' woodsmoker just ain't too bright....but it was not, and has not been so at other distros, obvious FROM THE TEXT as to which option to choose for an .iso burn.

I picked the first and got files.

I picked the second and got an .iso live cd.

So............I would VERY humbly like to suggest that LMD be the one and only distro that works with the maintainer to change the text and maybe put it in a special repo/update thing for LMD. Something like: "this is a live cd .iso, you can burn it as such, if you want to do that click 'burn live cd' or if you want the files click 'burn files'" or something like that.

To answer the obvious question of "well the person is running the distro so he or she has to have burned at least one live cd/dvd..right"...I would reply.....what if the person is straight from Windblows and bought the live cd from the cd place?

Anyhow.....that is the ONLY..........teensy weensy.....small little niggle and it is the same niggle I have had elsewhere so it is not unique to LMD10...

And....if it isn't done...then.... that is OK!!!! :D

Because LMD10 is ONE GREAT DISTRO!!!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Now that you bring it up . . . here is my 'pet peeve' (my small little nuggle)

There is no such Mint distro/release as LMDE-10

There is LM-10 -- which stands for LinuxMint version 10 -- which on based on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

and, there is LMDE -- LinuxMintDebianEdition -- a 'rolling release' based on Debian 6 Squeeze (testing).

Two totally different LinuxMint distributions, not to be confused with each other. 8)

Very true.

It does raise an interesting point though (to me at least). Mint has so many editions that it might be very intimidating if a newcomer visited the Mint website as to what edition to choose. There is no clear focus as to which option is best as they are all named similiar, as proven by the OP.

I vote for renaming both to :

LM10 and MDE10 to avoid ambiguity.
Or labeling the download(s) such.
