Lavinia

I know a great girl by that name, her birthday is comming up, and I'd really think she'd blush if I show her "Linux Mint 12 Lavinia"

I vote for Lucy. That way, when people say how much they enjoy Mint 12, they'll say, "I love Lucy."

...or if they hate it, Lucy will have some 'splainin to do.

I'm gonna add a vote for Lydia. First off, I dated a girl named Lydia, plus it reminds me of Winona Ryder's character in 'Beetlejuice'. I noticed a few votes for 'Lucy' or 'Lucille'... going along with the Linux Mint naming theme, change it to 'Lucia'! I'm gonna put in another suggestion for 'Lucretia'. Has mythological connotations and besides, maybe it'll attract fans of The Sisters of Mercy hahaha!

mtbmikex9 wrote:I am a fan of the Lyra suggestion. Other than being an awesome constellation in the sky, It is also a name of a background pony in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and is ironically mint in color. It seems like a match made in heaven in my eyes. Linux could benefit from all the friendship, love, and tolerance this brings to the community. Other than that I think Lyra is a beautiful name. Its got nerdy origins and most linux users are a bit nerdy. And If I am not mistaken, It is an instrument that I am sure makes a beautiful sound.

Hail fellow brony! I like your suggestion as well!

+1 Lila

Its about time a non European name was used. Besides Lila is used by Europeans as well. According to the Wikipedia, it mean beauty. I think its kind of appropriate. It also may mean "play, amusement" in Sanskrit...not sure about that.

Ok I am torn between the spelling, Lila (my current preference), Leela or even the middle eastern variants. I am not sure which is the more common spelling, both in the West as well as the Indic version.

Not sure about some of the suggestions noted earlier in this thread, some of them are either from fictional and possibly copy righted works or even worse have negative connotations.

The name has got to be Lucifer - and should be a dark theme with fiery red window borders :-) Also the Linux Mint sounds should be change to metal track samples...

I will go with LAYLA myself, it means "Dark-haired Beauty", it is a common Arabic/Persian girl's name.. And Mint community is growing and becoming more and more "international", so I think it should be given a different cultural name.

But... but... what about all the nice minty green the distro has kind of adopted as its colour scheme? It wouldn't be Mint anymore without the green...

And I'm not sure anyone would want heavy metal samples as the sound scheme, that would probably get grating on people after only a few minutes. The subtle sounds they use now are fine, thanks.

Also, on topic: +1 for Lucinda from me.

Most of you post Layla... i propose a variant of the name: Laila

As a reminder for the new Mint users: The name has to be female and afaik.... must be ending with an "a". :D

Since we start with L, I'd also continue with I... this would rhyme with LInux and MInt. From here I sought for something that sounds elegant for me, and came up with:

Lisa - smart, elegant... unsophisticated...
Leena\Lina, which means light. freedom (free man) and palm tree - which is green too...
Linea\Linnea - sounds sleek (Linux Mint Linnea - how does that sound ? - I'd say that comes out of the mount with ease... )

I like Lena with a single "e". For me, she's an elegant, European woman.

IMHO, the good marketing move would be to choose the name Lolita ;)
I am sure the amount of people who would download it would rapidly grow up... :)
