Local Mail Server on Linux (Mint)?

Postby equipment on Tue Apr 17, 2012 4:41 pm

I am wondering how straight forward and fast is it to install a local mail server on Linux Mint?

Which approach would you recommend?

I have experience with hMail Server on Windows so far.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

If you are using the Linux Mint Main Edition (based on Ubuntu), suggest you have a look here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Postfix For LMDE (based on Debian), have a look here: http://wiki.debian.org/Postfix

Some more information on adding software so that users can download email or access it through a website is here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MailServer

There are quite a few options.

Though I am wondering what would be an almost equal alternative to hMail as the server and Outlook as the interface for the emails. Do keep in mind I simply want it to be straight forward and easy to set up, and just use it for PHP programming (web development).

Either go the route of Postfix + Dovecot (which will let you receive email for your domain at your server, and let you access your email through IMAP or POP3), or if you want have a look at the alternatives lised for hMail on Linux: http://alternativeto.net/software/hmail ... form=linux
