has anyone tried voyager Linux

Postby sunewbie on Sat Jun 02, 2012 3:27 am

Hi,

yesterday, I installed Voyager Linux, based on Xubuntu 12.04 (it's not voyage linux, which is debian based).

I like sometimes, but it has some glitches.

1. Software center still contains software details in french
2. Conky's look great, but after each login you have to start custom conky's manually. i.e. the conky control does not remember last conkys used. Initially, it looked very attractive, but then I think that having your own custom conky is the best :)
2. default AWN setup looks good. When I added Clementine to AWN, it converted into text correctly. bt when I added Opera, which is not installed by default, it was added as icon (graphic)
3. contains useful tools like grub customizer, boot repair, etc
4. Contains Jupiter
5. contains some apps not installed by default in Xubuntu like hotot, simple scan, etc.
6. Language pack is installed by default, it less time for installation, as download time is saved.

Works well, I would say, keeping technical factor aside, it is a good or one of the best customization and implementation of XFCE.

Indeed it looks great. I saw the youtube & decided to go with xubuntu for my old laptop coz i read somewhere that Voyager doesn't have english installer. I have been searching & searching for conky package to install on mint13 or ubuntu 12.04. I want the same easy access of conky on other systems. Any ideas how to get that ?!

Voyager is based on xubuntu so it can be installed in English, but software center has app description (one line description and not the full description when you click on them) in french. It has xubuntu installer and grub identifies it as ubuntu (as xubuntu us also identified as Ubuntu). So if you have ubuntu, xubuntu and voyager, then you will have to depend upon sdaX number or change grub.cfg (which I did) and rename it. Again when new kernel is installed, all changes are wiped out and grub is re generated and reconfigured.

I have installed it and like it.

Conky control is amazing. It is installed by default with 21 conkys (2 scripts for stopping all conkys)

But there are problem, like if you change background, then conky may not be visible, as it's text colour may be similar to your wallpaper.

I had found conky GUI, but did not try it. I also find is difficult to install conky correctly, specially weather applet.

If you find one, please let me know.

EDIT:

you have to install conky-all or if required conky-hardcore

then find scripts and create a text file .conkyrc in home folder. Refer readme file. If fonts are required, then create .fonts in home folder. <ctrl> + H to show hidden files.

To add lua script, you need to create scripts or conky scripts folder and add scripts.

to run conky, open terminal and type conky

Finally add it to start up menu.

you will need to search net and some attempts to make it run (properly. Copy pasting of scripts generally does not work, as they require fonts, images, lua scripts, which you need to create).
