Some of you will like this post by Ikey at the SolusOS forums:

Cinnamon is a Gnome Shell fork which will inevitably reduce Gnome + Mint compatibility in the future.
MATE will also suffer a bad fate imo because its a Gnome Fork.

We'll be using Gnome 3 classic mode with a lot of modifications. It will look and act exactly the same
as our Gnome 2 setup, requiring no hardware acceleration. I've begun porting the older panel/applet
libraries to use GTK3 and D-BUS meaning we won't loose any of the functionality previously found.

Begun porting? Why? Vincent Untz, the original developer of the panels already did that around April last year. In what way would this new port be better?
I'm really honestly curious here, as I'm currently using LMDE with Gnome Classic and the panels and applets as they were ported by Vincent and I'm looking at a desktop which is almost indistinguishable from Gnome 2.

They will be using a customized version of the Gnome 3 fallback session that will look and act like Gnome 2 from what I read yesterday

Which - as you can read above - is exactly what LMDE with Gnome 3 in fallback mode is giving me now. Hence my question.

That's a fair question. Or, in what way would it be different? My guess is that Ikey has his own reasons and ideas... If you really want to know, check it out when the Wheezy-based SolusOS comes out -- or go over to the SolusOS forums and ask Ikey, maybe.

I like gnome classic but, to me at least, it looks nothing like the menu and apps layout ikey has in solusos, if he is going to make gnome-panel look just like what we now have in solusos, that will be something to see Gnome-panel/fallback is a bit plain compared to the solusos desktop and menu IMO.

SolusOS - Eveline 1.1 (32 & 64bit) released.

The SolusOS team is pleased to announce the release of SolusOS 1.1. This release brings greater hardware support and newer application versions, as well as support for hybrid GPU’s, such as the NVIDIA Optimus. A new 3.3.6 kernel is at its core with the BFS patch, alongside the Gnome 2.30 Desktop Environment. Many new application versions are present.

About this release
The 1.1 series, although based on the Eveline repositories, is to be maintained separately from the 1.0 series. The 1.1 release brings newer hardware support, whereas the 1.0 should be used by most people and will be considered the legacy support series.

Right now it is gnome 2 only but SolusOS 2 will be a custom design of gnome 3 fallback and will be based upon Wheezy. They really have done a nice job on this distro. Give it a look

Zorin 6 is already using this approach....it is based on ubuntu 12.04, uses a custom design of the gnome 3 fallback and the avant window navigator (awn) in panel mode along with the gno menu...a nice, simple solution...you have just one lower panel and a slab menu...

The default "windows 7 style" slab menu may turn off some linux users but that is really just a little "hook" to pull in newbies from windows (to make them feel comfortable)...but there are many other slab design choices in the gno menu setting if one prefers not to use the default...

When I heard that SolusOS 2 would use a modified gnome 3 that looks exactly like gnome 2 in SolusOS 1 I had a hard time believing it would work, or look just like gnome 2. But with all respects to Cinnamon, the classic gnome 3 menu in SolusOS is the best looking gnome 3 and most usable, and configurable, version I've seen, and the final SolusOS 2 isn't even out yet You can check out SolusOS 2 Alpha 4 at their web site:

That's just the cardapio menu tweaked, you can add cardapio to Gnome Shell with a few clicks, these things are there if you look a little, KB

I like what SolusOS have done to gnome-tweak-tool, much improved, afaik the first Gnome 3 distro to have proper theme management
