I don't know about you, but my system works like a charm, but that seems obvious because I created it on this system.

Don't know how it could be improved - it is working faultlessly on two very different boxes on my home network and does everything the way I want a KDE edition to behave. Still trying out all functions but so far it is 10/10.

My only hope/concern is that it keeps up-to-date with the rapid upgrades in applications. I found this easy link to get gimp 2.8 running:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... hilit=GIMP but UP5 is more important than ever now.....

I had tried and given up on the mint 13 KDE version and the early alpha for mepis 12 also had far too many problems too. (Very unusual this, even for one of their alphas - I have used Mepis 11 as my production PC for over two years - just excellent but too far behind now.) So LMDE KDE is now my OS of choice (excluding rpms versions which i have never got on with). If you stick to debian-derivatives, what else comes close?

Congratulations.

I've been totally daft!
I locally changed some files (logo's and config files) but these can be updated and overwritten...not good.
So, my efforts for this week will be to make my own deb files.
I'll keep you posted.

I got this when I try to upgrade the kernel (I'm tracking testing). At first install, I forget to copy the log, so this is the result on reinstall.

Successfully applied all changes. You can close the window now.
At first, I think I won't be able to boot to that kernel, but I can :D

Code: Select all

faramir@faramir-1215b ~ $ uname -r
3.2.0-3-amd64
So what is the error means??

the second is, I get two quotes on terminal, eh, konsole, My internet is very slow right now (dunno why), I can't upload the screenshot to photobucket, but I can get to this forum, ~5 minutes to load this post first page.. lol, so, this is the double quotes:

Code: Select all

On the fortunes:

Code: Select all

gconftool-2 --direct --config-source=`gconftool-2 --get-default-source` --set /desktop/linuxmint/terminal/show_fortunes --type bool false
This will edit /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml and set the parameter "show_fortunes" to "false".

Then, prevent updates from overwriting your file (don't know if this actually works):

Code: Select all

dpkg-divert --add --rename --divert /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml.divert /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml
cp /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml.divert /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml

Schoelje,
Instead of Kuser, userconfig from the Maya repositories is used.
Excellent! Thank you. It appears to be working fine as well. :D

Audio CDs are opening in Dolphin now with no problems.

QTCurve isn't working. GTK apps ignore the settings for GTK apps made in the KDE control center completely and continue using oxygen-gtk. Also, on my system at least, after changing the window theme to QTCurve in KDE control center, kwin corrupts and only buttons are visible until I reboot. oxygen-gtk and the theme-able QTCurve offer consistency between KDE & GTK gui's and both are finally working together via KDE control center in Mint KDE 13; it'd be nice to have the same options for consistent looks with the same polished user-friendly control available in LMDE KDE too.

Otherwise it seems to be working well, though as I'm busy with writing work I can't get into trying it out much yet. Perhaps this weekend.

A quirk (also general GUI related) happens trying to change the color scheme (via KDE control center). When you hit apply, the gui, or parts of it, reverts to what looks like an old default color scheme. If you close the window (KDE control center) and re-open it, the color scheme is usually correct. Also, plasmoidia stuff like Klipper isn't always updated when settings are changed (although that is something which has always been a bit flaky in other mint kde editions).

Could you please describe next time the steps you took so that I can reproduce what your problem is.
I guessed something like this:

Code: Select all

apt-get install qtcurve
Open System Settings / Application Appearance / Style
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible

Open System Settings / Application Appearance / Colors
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible

Open System Settings / Application Appearance / GTK+ Appearance
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible

Open System Settings /Workspace Appearance / Window Decoration
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible

Open these applications:
Firefox: theme changed
Thunderbird: theme changed
Synaptic: theme changed
Amarok: theme changed
Writer: theme changed
Gimp: theme changed

After reboot everything's still peachy!

I am not able to reproduce your problems this way.
Do I need to change the steps taken?

It seems that the unofficial LMDE KDE has gone international (spanish): http://blog.desdelinux.net/disponible-l ... dvd-201207

Another thing:
I've created two deb packages that replaces some mint packages.
This will prevent mint updates from overwriting LMDE KDE specific files.

The question here is:
Do you prefer that I publish these files for download and/or create a new iso with these packages pre-installed?

Schoelje,
UP5 is been tested atm http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 05&start=0 so (just my opinion) you could coordinate both at same time :D

Schoelje,
just noticed now one issue:
- trying to play 2 sound sources (amarok and a flash-based like youtube site) simultaneous is not possible (yeahh, i know, the odds of needing such a thing are not very high- i only realized this 1 month after having the system installed :lol: )
- don't know if this is related with my soundcard or can be replicated elsewhere; anyway installing pulseaudio solved the issue

Code: Select all

Commit Log for Thu Aug 2 00:32:15 2012

Installed the following packages:
gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio (0.10.31-3)
libsystemd-daemon0 (44-4)
libwebrtc-audio-processing-0 (0.1-2)
pulseaudio (2.0-3)
pulseaudio-module-x11 (2.0-3)
now i can use this feature again next year :P

zerozero, I try to play mp3 on audacious, another mp3 on amarok, a video on vlc, and a video from youtube, (all together) and all played nicely, yeah, I hate the mixing sound, but it works on me..I don't know if this is relevant or not, but is that because I'm tracking testing?
Is it OK if I continue to post something here if Im not using UP repo like the default ISO?

oh, and I prefer a deb package, I think its better is the new ISO is the UP5 ISO

tks for checking :wink: it's probably something related to my soundcard (and yeahh this was also done in testing)

Schoelje,

Okay, example:

sudo apt-get install qtcurve

Open System Settings / Application Appearance / Style
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible

Open System Settings / Application Appearance / Colors
Select choice of scheme (any color scheme should work with QTCurve) and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible (re-starting system settings may or may not be required to have colors correctly displayed in system settings itself although colors are correctly implemented elsewhere).

Open System Settings / Application Appearance / GTK+ Appearance
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are ignored

Open System Settings /Workspace Appearance / Window Decoration
Select QtCurve and hit Apply
-> Changes are visible

Open these applications:
Firefox: colors changed, theme not changed
Thunderbird: colors changed, theme not changed
Synaptic: colors, theme never changed (not supposed to change, it's root via kdesudo)
Amarok: colors changed, theme changed
KWrite: colors changed, theme changed
Zim (a GTK app): colors changed, theme not changed
Gimp: colors changed, theme not changed

Reboot makes no difference.
I am not able to reproduce your problems this way.
Do I need to change the steps taken?
I am as puzzled as you are why you wouldn't have the same behavior. This is how it happens whether using a default installation as on the ISO with a fresh home directory, both on my "real" installation and a virtual installation in virtualbox. Are you running as root? Or perhaps your installation differs from the defaults as on the ISO somehow?

Happily, the installation from the latest ISO was also a breeze. The installer and sgfxi script etc all worked flawlessly. Aside from the theme/GUI snafus, this LMDE KDE is the most solid and problem free system I've used to date. :D

Did you try gtk-chtheme to change your GTK themes?

Code: Select all

apt-get install gtk-chtheme
If that works for you, I could track the differences between the two applications.

No, I just used KDE control center. I'll try that and report what happens.

Just found another misbehavior: I tried changing the default app for .flac audio files (Properties > Edit file type > move up, for example, vlc on top, as default to open .flac file type) but user settings are ignored: Amarok remains default every time.
