boot opening page correct but...

Post by biffer »

Hi,

I have PcLinuxOS installed on partition sda1. It worked satisfactorily until I installed MInt Mate on partition sda3. Then, though Mint's partition editor said that I would get the choice of the two systems once the new installation was complete, all I can get is Mint.

When I choose to boot PcLinuxOS I get a black screen that says:

Kernel panic - not syncing; vfs: Unable to mount root for fs on unknown block (0,0). There's quite a lot more including:
BFS/O Not tainted.

I'd appreciate some help here, please.

IIRC, PCLinuxOS is still using GRUB Legacy instead of GRUB 2. It sounds as if you installed Linux Mint at let it overwrite PCLinuxOS' GRUB Legacy in the MBR with Linux Mint's GRUB 2. Probably you need to use whatever way PCLinuxOS has for this to reinstall GRUB Legacy to /dev/sda1. With GRUB Legacy installed to /dev/sda1 instead of to the MBR (/dev/sda), GRUB 2 on the MBR will during boot see GRUB Legacy and will chain-load GRUB Legacy, which in turn will load PCLinuxOS.
