So, if I install murrine-themes what are the consequences for the used oxygen theme (I suppose nothing at all)?

The greyed out startup and shutdown buttons issue is solved.
I had exactly the same problem with LMDE KDE a while ago.
It was related to the upgrade of xinit.
I just downgraded it to the previous version and I got my buttons back!

regarding murrines-themes it will not impact oxygen (as far as i know but as soon as i install i will try it), it will just give rendering support when needed for the themes that use the unico and/or the murrine engine(s)

Yes, Murrine themes/engine fixes the theme issue. (to some extent.. ). Theme changes, but icons only HALF change and panel has white fonts on light grey.

Have you installed the other gtk2-engines-* from synaptic (the qtcurve one has lots of kde dependencies so I wouldn't install that)? I had to do this to make bluebird work. Besides, logging out and logging back in (which I had to do to switch to the Mint-X icons), I don't know what would fix the icons (which icon set is it?). Also, the oxygen theme works fine for me with all of the gtk2-engines-* installed.

Edit: logging out and logging back in is required after switching I think (and after installing the engines).

Yes, the Mint-X icons work perfectly. The ones that I had a problem with were Faenza? This same set has worked on dozens of other distros...

Most of the themes I have tried work, render correctly (no-win95) DARK themes render correctly but light (gray in color)....

OK, Never mind the above. Just playing switching themes /window border/icons, et. Now dark themes work as they are supposed to (DARK).
Dont know what I did, if anything...
Its just some of the Faenza icons that are a little 'dodgy'.

Nope.

Got the same 4.10 in my old LMDE/XFCE where they all worked fine.
See my last post. Themes seem to have sorted themselves.... MAGIC...

I also noticed that the flash plug-in was listed as not installed.

Since I normally install Google Chrome stable, I downloaded the 32-bit deb file to try in the Live DVD. Found out it was missing libcurl3 and libnss-something (I forgot to write it down) when dpkg -i was invoked to install. It is running fine now that I installed the missing packages.

Usual problems with detecting my monitor (bad EDID) yielded 1024x768 resolution on 1280x1024 monitor. xrandr was able to fix that problem, no problem with not detecting gamma of display, which is another bug which sometimes pops up on my machine.

Pepper-flash with Chrome works fine on JupiterBroadcasting, Youtube, and Farmville2. Farmville2 and my Google apps normally complained about flash being out of date.

Sound worked without fiddling, either.

I seem to have difficulty downloading iso..

1. Download a few times, and not complete... perhaps network issue or server issue?
after many tries,, a some 6 hours later, I got the complete iso..

2. dd to USB flash, boot computer without issue

3. installed to one partition. set boot loader to install on root partition, no issue too.

4. chainload to the partition and boot OK.

5. play with default theme only , but change font to larger size to make the poor eyesight happy

6. proceed to try DDM for the first time.
one comment, extremely slow....

it shows semi- correct? on three things
a. HD5450, correctly detected, also correctly recommend to install fglrx. but i am not sure if the version 1:12 is correct, perhaps that was available in the repos.

b. BCM57788, this is wired LAN gigabit NIC
DDM detect the chip correctly.
however it thinks it is a wireless .

c. PAE capable. correctly detected and correctly suggested to install pae kernel

7. so I ran the desktop for a while, some 20-30 minutes
and :::: it is the hottest!! among any other OS I used.
typically cpu temp was in 36-38degc regular usage
this installed OS showed single CPU temp at 58degC.. and the box is far too hot to touch..

I have to turn on a big blower to cool the box!!

next i choose to install fglrx.
it took a very long time to install... some 20 minutes, quite unusual... perhaps server/network or something?

8. reboot and running, glxgears show gears are running..
did not paid too much attention to it because the box is too hot to run

a quick check on menu>settings and menu>system: could not find any AMD icons that usually appear after successful ATI driver install..
not sure if fglrx is really working..

decide to install pae kernel to attempt cooling the hot box
8. reboot, now running with pae kernel 3.2.0-4-686-pae
after big fan cooling outside the box for a while, turn fan off, run for some 10 minutes..
now cpu temp reached 36-39degc

9. check glxgears on terminal, no gears moving . terminal shows

Very good alpha
BUT
would not login till wiped partitions (with gparted under pmagic from USB Stick) and reinstalled. Although I think that's due to my hybrid SSD HD . other mints/debian have problem also installing.

1.My wireless card not seen (always seen out of box for last few years including LMDE!)
2. media not set to auto-play. Easy fix
3. DVD don't play. 'Libdvdcss2' not installed by default. Easy Fix

May want to install (by default) either 'Hardinfo'(?)(system profiler/benchmark or 'htop'
also maybe a lite web cam app (to test) camorama(??)

My computer Thinkpad x200 tablet (8g memory) wirless card 'broadcom'(? )

On NEC laptop, does not boot.
after count down 10 second, it hangs for very long.

further test, no wireless on intel wifi, a bit surprise, may be non-free firmware not installed? unlikely since broadcom BCM57788 is part of non-free firmware also..

On Dell laptop,
after countdown 10 seconds, it goes on to boot process, when it is settled, the image shown on the dell display is that of a plain blue bakcground with the 'mouse' right at the center ( one of the old xfce wallpaper.


On an old compaq presario desktop, 10 year old, some 10 kg or 21 lbs .
( haha, sound like similar to Gene's old box??)
P4, 2.4G single core, slow machine but heavy and solid, worth keeping as backup.
surprisingly all hardware survived for 10 years, except I changed power supply more than 1 year ago.

It took very long time to boot... but it eventually boots up

My Bad

would not login till wiped partitions (with gparted under pmagic from USB Stick) and reinstalled. Although I think that's due to my hybrid SSD HD . other mints/debian have problem also installing.

THE USB pendrive still in rear port of dock.

Will live and install, but the install won't let me pass the 'login/greeter.

it shows semi- correct? on three things
a. HD5450, correctly detected, also correctly recommend to install fglrx. but i am not sure if the version 1:12 is correct, perhaps that was available in the repos.

DDM does not download anything else then from the repositories, hence, the version must be correct.

7. so I ran the desktop for a while, some 20-30 minutes
and :::: it is the hottest!! among any other OS I used.
typically cpu temp was in 36-38degc regular usage
this installed OS showed single CPU temp at 58degC.. and the box is far too hot to touch..

This is due to live-installer failing to write /etc/fstab (no swap = a lot of work for the cpu)
A workaround is available in this thread. The next version wil have the fix.

Please provide the fix, preferably by editing a config file (makes my life a lot easier).

3. DVD don't play. 'Libdvdcss2' not installed by default. Easy Fix
