Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
Eh, that's nice...but, what does that say about the risk of an upgrade when it comes?
Is it absolutely certain, rather certain, semi-certain, could be either way, semi-uncertain, almost uncertain or no way it's going to crash?

Good question.zerozero wrote:now that all the major issues are solved (as far as i can see >> apart from that odd networks icon rendering problem) i have a more general concern:
all the xfce4.10 are local packages (from siduction), when debian migrates 4.10 into testing (not before next spring for sure) all the replaces will be smooth or is there changes in the siduction packages version number that might cause breakages?
This may be of help.
I originally updated LMDE/XFCE/SID (201204.iso) From XFCE 4.8 in Debian SID to 4.10 in Debian Experimental. It was not until some time after than I added the Siduction xfcenext repo. At that time I do not remember anything new being updated, but I was able to add some missing xfce panel apps that were not available in Debian Experimental. I cant check logs as that other computer is down until I get a new power supply...
It appears that Siduction just used the Debian Experimental packages in their own XFCE NEXT repo.
(I haven't checked them, as of yet)

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
ahah as far as i can see it should be safe; apt is clumsy with downgrades but we can see above that it goes fairly well, so we can expect that the upgrade will too specially as Gene points out most of the pkgs are "just" debian experimental pkgs backported. there's no weird version number changes in those pkgs (the kind of thing that could make apt go nuts and nuke the upgrade path)Schoelje wrote:but, what does that say about the risk of an upgrade when it comes?
Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
Can you see any issues with just adding the Siduction xfcenext repo to sources list?Schoelje wrote:I think that's a rhetorical questionzerozero wrote:now that all the major issues are solved (as far as i can see >> apart from that odd networks icon rendering problem) i have a more general concern:

There's no way to be sure if the upgrade will or won't cause problems.
It was a choice: go with siductions 4.10 or keep the older version from the Debian repositories.
There's another solution: get my own repositories, but that'll be a bit more complicated (where to host, what's it going to cost, lack of experience, time, etc).
It just contains xfce specific packages..
(Actually I did that already.... )

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
I'm not knowledgeable on this stuff BUT
if their local can you give them a bogus version number(?) then when the 4.10 actually hits testing they don't auto upgrade with Upack, and can test then and upgrade (or not) or someone write (not me ) a package (meta) that will?
Maybe stupid question

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
Good discussion.
There will be pros and cons, as for most decisions.
As for now, I'll leave it as-is with only LM repositories.
Now, for something completely different: RC1 is out!

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
RC installed, no problems with installation.
Very first impression good, but still using Oxygen theme and KDE cursors? If you really want to Mint-ify it what about Mint-X and DMZ cursors? I added them and they work fine. Again icons only changed after logout/in...
Had to adjust font setting per previous post, to look good. (which I cant locate at the moment..)
PAE kernel install went fine. No problems. I forgot to choose the speediest repo, and it took a while...
Perhaps putting a note about that in Welcome Screen?
Going to clone, and install Nvidia.
Nice work.

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
Alacate works.
Swap file was recognized (dual boot - was not recognized on Alpha)
One problem.
After install of PAE ...DDM does not recognize Nvidia.
EDIT: Disregard above. I forgot to refresh the repos, after running
Thanks, 'zz'..

AAARGHHH!...
Of course, I forgot to refresh the repos...
Noobie mistake. (Well, I AM in my 2nd childhood)..

Its running now.

Just wanted to say hello and express my interest in lmde xfce.
I've been creepin' on the thread for a while, watching developments
Thanks for doing this! o/

I'm so glad that you are living and have procreated.
All of the work I wish I had the time to do/understand how to do, you have done. I love you man.
- P.S.
I think I drank too much champagne.

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
Now on/trying the 64RC
Display still seems washed out (theme & lighting(?)) but not as bad as the alpha or Beta (32 bit)
My wireless still not working from live (have wired tho) but after install (never connected wired before install either) works right away, DDM list no special wireless driver( ). Because using 'Unetbootin USB??
Everything else seems fine (so far ) including alacarte.

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
finally installed the rc (amd64), not much to say everything went without incidents (installation itself, nvidia drivers, some small tweaks)
re: the choice of oxygen theme and icons (personally i can't complain i like oxygen) it's my understanding that besides the consistence (cww mentioned this) Schoelje is also avoiding headaches with gtk themes breakages with every minor gnome version bump (well, at least this is what i think he's thinking )

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
I've installed the 64-bit RC too. That's actually a really good point that I had forgot about - Oxygen is, ironically, one of the only gtk 3 themes that is a binary and also supports xfce. I haven't done much yet besides install, but everything seems fine.
Edit: I completely forgot to mention that this was the first release that successfully installed the VBox Guest Additions by default.
Edit 2: Both xfce4-taskmanager and lxtask are installed by default.

Re: The unofficial LMDE XFCE
That's a matter of debian packaging. I think you'd have to email the maintainers. (Also, I'd be surprised if GNOME used github for anything but mirrors -- the README says to register on bugzilla. It's possible no one will see your pull request.)Schoelje wrote:https://github.com/GNOME/alacarte/pull/1
Please drop the line "Recommends: gnome-panel" in the control file.
Users complained about the amount of dependencies it pulls in when not running gnome:
jstpierre (magcius) is a nice guy. He filed a bug for me when the cinnamon weather applet broke due to proxy settings.

Gene, you are far aheadPostby GeneC » Thu Jan 10, 2013 2:46 am
Can you see any issues with just adding the Siduction xfcenext repo to sources list?
It just contains xfce specific packages..
(Actually I did that already.... )
My download speed is so horrible..
few hours, then broke.. stopped at 7xxMB as if it was a CD size
now restart.. but in terminal mode, better way to recover if internet breaks
wget -c "address of iso"
I have been using siduction for as long as they have it there. No issue at all
I was thinking once RC is installed, I would change kernel , conver to sid,, and because of xfce4.10 hosted by siduction , I am quite sure to use it and switch to sid...
still downloading RC1... got to keep waiting...
