The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

23/01/2013
webworker has been so kind again to provide us with a mirror download.

21/01/2013
The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1 is out.
The following bugs were solved:
  • Some cups/printing packages are missing and cups-pdf is giving problems.
  • VLC looks ugly (default gtk theme).
  • Samba shares don't work because of an empty /etc/network/interfaces file.
Known bugs
  • The menu editor Alacarte is not always working as expected, but as long there is no good alternative we'll have to learn to live with it.
Downloads
These are the live installers for the unofficial LMDE Xfce or you can download them from my homepage.

Downloading both now...

Just quick question(?) Why such a size diference betwenn 32 bit and 64bit (never seen a ISO diference of around more than around 10mb)?

Just wondering

Yes, I asked myself the same question.
So, if you find out...please, tell me.

Who would like to write a review for Full Circle Magazine?

Ronnie Tucker of Full Circle Magazine wrote me this when I told him about the new unofficial LMDE Xfce:
I don't know much about XFCE, but I'll ask around to see if I can get someone to review it for the next issue of Full Circle. Unless you know someone who would like to review it then that'd be even better. All they'd need to do is review it, include a few screens, and email it to me (ronnie@fullcirclemagazine.org).
Let me know if you want your name immortalized in Full Circle Magazine!

One question, are the isos hybrid?

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

I got the thing downloaded, md5sum checks out so it is looking good so far.

I also downloaded the torrent file. Have started it in transmission. Figure to replace the iso in the torrent directory with the one I downloaded so I can go directly to seeding.

raidensub wrote:One question, are the isos hybrid?
They are the same as any LM iso. So, they're hybrid (bootable from DVD and USB).
You should be able to do this to make a bootable USB:

Code: Select all

dd if=lmdexfce32_up6_201301.iso of=/dev/sdb

Thanks, widget. That'll help.

This is not a problem with LMDE. I think it is a problem with my hardware and the nVidia driver. On my system, the nVidia drivers won't give me any screen resolution higher than 640x480 on my 1280x1024 display. Nouveau driver defaults to 1024x768, but I can use xrandr to get to 1280x1024. I could switch back, but my video system is listed as being compatible with the new nVidia driver.

Code: Select all

I was able to switch back using the device manager, and I will stay with nouveau, at least for now. Just experimenting.

finish now installation/setting the first things (64bit)

very impressive :D

couple notes:
  • good: wicd lists all active networks (in live mode and installed); the script works :D
  • odd: vlc starts with a weird interface (in live and installed)
    Image
vlc>tools>preferences change "system's default" to "gtk" and it should look like this
    Image
ddm worked again without flaws

Code: Select all

zerozero@un-xfce:~$ inxi -Gx
Graphics: Card NVIDIA G92 [GeForce GTS 250] X.Org 1.12.4 Res: 1440x900@59.9hz
GLX Renderer GeForce GTS 250/PCIe/SSE2 GLX Version 3.3.0 NVIDIA 304.48 Direct Rendering Yes
zerozero@un-xfce:~$
just one question Schoelje  what's up with this boot time? this "thing" boots in seconds, faster than distros with systemd in this same hardware (ahh and debian has a slow boot  )

I'm going to include the config file, but that'll be for the next iso.

And I thought LMDE KDE was fast. Really I haven't got an idea...just a lot of TLC, I suppose.

I noticed the same thing. Fast boots. I moved UN/LMDE/XFCE 32 bit that I had on my old standby computer to my main box (specs in signature) that I just got running again.
It boots noticeably faster than my old LMDE/XFCE/SID or even Maya 13 XFCE.
Whatever you did, it works nicely..... :D

Yes, I asked myself the same question.

Maybe the 64 bit because this is 1st mint ISO I think that has 'Multi-arch" by default(?)

I had distro hopped on 2 debianish during time between rc and final ( ) they also seemed to boot faster than the norm (for debian). Was their something new in 'wheezy' that the ISO inherited from a 'net-install debian" (?)
