Major Linux Problems on the Desktopor Why Linux is not (yet) Ready for the Desktop,2013 edition
http://linuxfonts.narod.ru/why.linux.is ... rrent.html

Covered many of my peeves of Linux this last decade!

And still dis-heartened about the issues being abandoned,ignored,etc...
I Love the whole concept of Linux and it's philosophies. But doesn't mean total fanboism blindness to the issue.
Or must not be a real issues since it isn't an issue on "My System" mentality.

Couple that with the new attidude and stance that dev's are taking today.
GNOME (et al): Rotting In Threes http://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/11/ ... in-threes/
"Apparently in the view of these devs, users are merely walking billboards for their ‘brand presence’, to hell with what the users actually want. You’re expected to change your way of working every 6 months just because these devs want to impose their way of working on all their users. Developers decide what is Good (with a big G), without any possible customization by the user."
"And reading those dev comments, it’s so clear that most of their thought and energy is devoted to their marketing and ‘brand presence’, and so very little to making quality, innovative software. By some strange coincidence, that’s just what has been largely lacking in the field of Linux apps."
And for me anyways confirms that the concept that developers had was "How can we make Linux better for the Community?" which has evolved into "How can we Linux better for Our Vision". User's Be Damned!

Thanks for the links, Orbmiser. For a long time now I have suspected this was going on out of our view, but I never suspected to what extent. I've never seen a better argument to move to either KDE or Xfce.

Well, it's a bit weird, then, that desktop Linux is more popular and more widely used than ever before, isn't it?

Well it may or may not be weird or unique situation of present growth. There are always spurts & growth and different levels of users trying out and leaving linux all the time. Microsoft has much to do with that and their windows8 fiasco helps driving people to trying out linux. As well as cycles of people getting tired of windows and their systems being attacked all the time and slowing down. Or just can't afford the new hardware requirements for new Windows machine. And look for alternatives for older hardware.

Yep some of that going on also with KDE not listening to all users. Have always been a Gnome user until recent.
And moved to KDE 4.10 and for me best choice I made for myself.

As KDE still gives users what they ask for in fact in my eyes too much. And configuring and tweak can be overwhelming with options.
But just tweak it down for a more minimal desktop effect more towards the gnome end.

And biggest was for me having the option coupled with built in settings for apps to remember their size & position. Which is a big boon for me on 3 Virtual workspaces on dual displays.

And growth spurts have less to do with the ongoing mostly hidden issues and agendas until they have been around enough and it happens to impact them in a personal way on their personal use for desktop. New users are oblivious to that their first steps into linux.

Their are still plenty of those New to linux struggling with Video,Sound,Wifi issues that have been ongoing since the beginning with some being dealt with eventually others never will be dealt with.

And after awhile Many of those New User's giving Linux a whirl just get frustrated and leave.

Ugh, "ready for the desktop"... I hate that phrase, it's almost as horrible as the "just works" mantra everyone seems to be chanting these days... Like, whose desktop are we talking about here? Is there some kind of generic desktop that everyone uses, which has a set of needs that any system needs to satisfy in order to be "ready" for it? The Desktop?

My desktop has been ready for linux, and has been just-working just fine for a couple of years now.
