Nvidia seeks peace with Linux, pledges help on open source driver (Updated)

Torvalds has responded to Ars, saying he's optimistic but not quite ready to apologize to Nvidia.
"We'll see," Torvalds wrote in an e-mail. "I'm cautiously optimistic that this is a real shift in how Nvidia perceives Linux.
The actual docs released so far are fairly limited, and in themselves they wouldn't be a big thing,
but if Nvidia really does follow up and start opening up more, that would certainly be great.

Right as SteamOS is announced :D
I'd rather see them open up the existing driver than help with nouveau.

What Nvidia wants to do is make their binary firmware blob public, so that open drivers could use the binary firmware - while the firmware itself would still stay closed source...

How can we know there won't be NSA backdoors in that firmware? It's already been shown that GPU firmware can be used as a backdoor to take control of a system. Seems kinda scary...
