I have to tell you...i have worked with ubuntu and ubuntu based distros like mint for example and ubuntu does a lot to the debian stuff and refines it quite a bit...i saw the difference when i used debian based distros...i don't think you guys realize how good you have it with this being ubuntu based!

I started with ubuntu (8.04) my first linux distro...i always liked it but i wasn't crazy about it's original layout (you know, 2 panels with fan out menu) so i looked around and discovered and switched to mint because i liked the lower panel and mint slab style menu...but unity brought me back to ubuntu as i also like docks (having spent about a year with the mac after leaving windows but before discovering linux) Actually i like Mac a lot but what i didn't like was being locked in to their high priced hardware...Linux seemed like the perfect solution because i could buy a 17" laptop for $500, wipe off windows and install linux on it instead :D

Sure beats spending $1000-$2000 for a Mac...
I guess Ubuntu is a nice Mac alternative, yeah :)

Do you prefer the Mac/Ubu-style layout, with a dock and so on?

I'm more of a fan of the classic Windows look, so I guess that creates an initial subjective difference.

And I suppose yeah it's hard for me - an end user - to appreciate the work that goes into Ubuntu. But the thing is it's the end result that I see, not the intermediary steps. And... as I say I just don't like Unity.

It seems silly that they push people onto Unity, because it's quite clear that not everybody will like that look. But then I suppose they could argue that not everyone likes the OSX look either.

Ultimately, as I say, it's great that there are options out there for everyone :)

I would say, that: I never liked the original ubuntu layout of 2 panels and fan out menu as i felt it wasted too much screen space...when i discovered mint with the lower panel and the slab menu it had (in the old gnome 2) i switched to mint as it reminded me more of the windows layout...

I like Windows 7 (though when i use it i auto hide the lower panel for more screen space...I can tolerate windows 8 IF a program like start8 is added to it which restores the start button AS WELL AS the windows "slab" menu...And i do like docks like MAC OSX has which is why Unity was an easy adjustment...

So, my favorites are: 1) slab menu with lower panel and 2) dock with top panel...

Docks are really fine, i think...and Unity is pretty simple to use if you set it up the way i do.....which is to:
1) Put all Favorites on the Unity Launcher (dock) 2) Put Frequently Used Programs on the launcher 3) Use the "dash search" mostly just for bringing up the programs i don't use very often (like say, the Terminal)... In this way, everything is mostly just "1 click" access... :D

And i "autohide" the unity launcher and reduce the size of the icons to about 38 pixels (i think that looks best on my 17" laptop/desktop replacement that is my main desk computer)...The nice thing about the "global" top panel is that it saves screen space, which i like very much

I find debian based distros to have a more, kind of "raw" feeling...in fact web page rendering isn't even as nice because they don't use the great "patching" that Ubuntu uses that really makes a tremendous improvement...Also, ubuntu has newer apps, and as i mentioned, they make a LOT of refinements and really smooth things out quite a bit...

Hm well that's cool :)

I think the layout thing is very subjective.

It really isn't just that I don't like change. I mean, I think Android is great, I love widgets, desktop effects, Google Now, touchscreen interfaces (when done right), window snapping, lots of things.

I just... don't like being forced into changes that I feel get in my way or over-complicate my experience or are poorly implemented. I like to have a streamlined system that works well, looks stylish, but also knows when to "get out of my way" and let me get on with just using the PC.

Linux Mint is EXACTLY like that, I find! :)

I was having trouble with Amazon Instant Video in Raring and then Saucy, but I forgot about bleachbit, which I think is something that made it work now by cleaning out the firefox director, or else it's the new interface at the Amazon site, looks completely different now.

The recent problems which I experienced are not exactly from Saucy but are based on it - Zorin OS 8.

I installed it and...for the first 5 minutes I have had 3 Internal Errors...WHAT THE... Back in the day when I have had Saucy I experienced even less crashes but still crashes you know... My first impression for Saucy was "it's not so bad" but now my impression is "it is bad"!

I don't know what causes this errors because on Petra I never experienced such things (of course we need to mention that Petra is not directly based on Saucy). Which however makes my final guess that the kernel in Saucy is TOTALLY broken!

@RacerBG: that could very well be Zorin related problems as i ran 13.10 for several months and it was rock stable and have been running 14.04 development now for 2 months and even that is very stable...oh, we get a few glitches in development every now and then (after all, it IS development) but overall it's been very reliable and i have been using it as my main desktop! Of course, that has newer kernels then 13.10 but still, as i said Ubuntu 13.10 (in it's original form as opposed to a spin off like Zorin) was extremely reliable i found...
