Doudoulinux for children: Have you tried it

Post by Brahim Salem »

Today I have discovered a new linux distro called Doudoulinux http://www.doudoulinux.org/web/english/index.html It is designed for children up to 12 years old and I need it for my lil nephew! Is it good enough?

I think I partially answered in another thread. My daughter tried when she was 2.5 years old. Very fast to boot and run apps, no double clicking, all apps full screen, good firewall, very tightly locked down with dansguardian and squid, and I believe it works with touchscreen. Needs new kernel for some hardware. Browser is a bit too restrictive without editing the dansguardian settings (eg. Sesame Street is blocked). A bit too different from Windows for my wife to help. Ended up using Mint13 instead. Using the launcher my daughter doesn't have to double click anyway. I think she'd prefer a hybrid touch + mouse + keyboard system, but her laptop doesn't have touchscreen.

Seeing you're from Tunisia, you might like the French language support of doudou linux.

My kids enjoyed it for a while. Worked easily "out of the box". However, even young kids these days can catch on to a traditional desktop environment, and you can easily run the same programs (GCompris, etc) in Ubuntu or Mint. Still, really good if you want to have a discrete computer just for the kids.
