Why do some distros still use gnome 2!!
I have noticed that some distros are still using gnome 2 (like Tails OS) and when I click on the panel it says that it is developed by the Free Software Foundation. Why don't they use more modern desktops like Mate instead of gnome 2 ? It feels like there is more than one direction in the free software movement, right??

Because more modern doesn't necessarily mean better. See, one of the last "old" window managers - twm - dates back to 1987 and still has some fans.

Man you are right Tails seems to be faster than any other distro/dev/urandom wrote:Because more modern doesn't necessarily mean better. See, one of the last "old" window managers - twm - dates back to 1987 and still has some fans.

I know it does but i'm speaking about the desktop environment. That's 2 diffrent things bro/dev/urandom wrote:Because Tor destroys performance.

Even in terms of desktop performance, Gnome never was a killer.

which one do you think is faster Mate or gnome 2?/dev/urandom wrote:Even in terms of desktop performance, Gnome never was a killer.

Mate is good and Gnome 2 is good, The difference being that some distros do not want to move on to gtk 3 libs. gnome 2 still is able to use the old gtk 2 libraries and for some that makes more sense. Redhat enterprise linux was still on gnome 2 last I looked but that may have change with the latest updates.
gnome 2 is more mature and has a proven track record and is quite stable. Though it's no longer being developed , it still has quite a following in the enterprise sector.
Just my 2 cent's worth
I should have mentioned mate is in the process of changing to gtk3 libraries.
