European Union Open Source Strategy

Postby LitBolt on Mon Jun 01, 2009 1:19 am

Ok, this is a kinda old article, not to mention a controversial one, but after a few searches of the forum I couldn't see that it had been posted before, so here goes:

I could rant horrendous for hours about this, but I think the best observation I can make regarding the situation is this: Open source is gaining ground, especially if an organization as large as the EU would endorse it. If a company like Microsoft is trying to stop it's spread, then that means they consider it a threat, no matter how dismissive their PR department and execs may be about the idea. And if they consider it a threat, that means that it has real merit, and they know it. So what you end up with is both your "friend" (OSS advocates) and "enemy" (Microsoft, for example) saying the same thing: Open Source is viable, and I can think of no better endorsement than that.

hmm - I might or might not have mentioned that in the newsletter
This is very similar to how the standard ooxml was accepted after heavy MS pressure

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
