Which LinuxMint version and WM do you use?

Postby vrkalak on Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:56 pm

Just out of curiosity, I would like to know a few things about everyone, in general?

I know that not everyone uses LinuxMint as their primary Operation System or have more than one computer.
Some with more than one OS. Many Linux users are or have been "Distro Hopping" in the past.

I was just wondering what brought you to LinuxMint and what Desktop Environment you use?
And what other Linux OSs you've tried?
and the WHY to all of these?

I would like to know these things of the Forum Users and the Mint Team, in particular?
(Wonders which version Hesse or Clem use?)
Just 'copy and paste' the following: (fill it in, of course)

Operating System/Distribution:
OS Version:
Kernel version:
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment:
Dock:
Conky:
Browser:
IM:
Other OS's used:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

I'll start . . .
Operating System/Distribution: LinuxMint-7
OS Version: Main
Kernel version: 2.26.28-15 generic i686
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment: Gnome
Dock: No, sometimes Cairo-Dock
Conky: Yes
Browser: FireFox 3.0 or Chromium
IM: Pidgin
Other OS's used: Ubuntu 9.04 (that's what brought me here)

I was a Windows user for many, many years before using a Mac.
Back to Windows (hated Vista) ... wanted more ... found Ubuntu, which led me to LinuxMint
Now, my entire PC is dedicated with LinuxMint-7, awaiting the arrival of Helena.

Operating System/Distribution: My laptop - dual boot Vista Ultimate/Arch. Main desktop (big rig) - Arch and crunchbang. 3 kids + media computers (4 computers) Mint. Wife's laptop - Vista Ultimate. This is my current setup. I have partitions on my big rig for more distros but am only dual booting at the moment.
OS Version: Vista Ultimate fully updated X 2, Arch X2 fully updated = rolling release, Mint X 4 = fully updated 7
Kernel version: 30 kernel for Arch, 28 (?) for Mint. I always use the latest kernel in the normal repos.
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment: Fluxbox for both Arch installs, Openbox for Crunchbang, Xfce on all Mint installes (the Xfce community edition). Chris has also installed Gnome and KDE on his Mint but prefers Xfce. I have given up on Gnome and KDE and really dislike both. Ever since I quit using Compiz-Fusion I have went to Fluxbox and will stay. It rocks, even on a modern 4 core, 4GB computer.
Dock: None
Conky: Standard on crunchbang, none on anything else.
Browser: Firefox 90%, Opera 10%
IM: Pidgin running Yahoo Messenger but only to communicate with the wife while she travels. Also linked into my Blackberry along with my Yahoo mail.
Other OS's used: Already noted. I am an equal opportunity OS user. I love Vista, have used Linux for 10 years, and am comfortable enough with the BSDs and Solaris. If I had to pick one it would be Linux but I dislike where Linux has been going lately. I was primarily Fedora but since F9 have left that distro in disgust. Mint is awesome but for me Arch was my salvation. Overall I would rank my personal preferences as 1. Arch, 2. Gentoo, 3. debian, 4. Fedora. Although Mint is not mentioned it is my first choice for the kids computers and my first recommendation for anyone wanting to try Linux.

Operating System/Distribution:openSUSE 11.1
OS Version:KDE
Kernel version:2.6.27.29-0.1-pae i686
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment:KDE 4.3
Dock:NO

Other OS's used:Right now, none

I have in the past used Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, Mepis, Sabayon, Linux Mint Main, KDE, and XFCE, Debian, Ubuntu Ultimate, Pardus, Windows 95, 98, XP, and Vista.

Started out with Linux in February using openSUSE and it will probably stay on my computer. I've tried the others I listed to see what they were like and the only one that came close to knocking out openSUSE was Mint KDE. I do still recommend Mint to new users.

I operate three desktop computers in a engineering business setting. They are networked and two use Mint 7 XFCE and one Mint 6 XFCE. All dual boot with Windows XP where CAD work can be done. Due to my tropical location (average ambient 25 degrees C.) and no air conditioning all are set up to monitor cpu temp and video card temp. I run the OSs at derated speeds or cool n quiet.

Started out with Ollivetti Mini in 1982, CPM, ZCPR, various versions of DOS, Windows 95, 98, XP, Caldera, Mandrake, Mepis, Ubuntu, Mint.

Desktop: XFCE
Conky: yes
Browser: Firefox 3.0 and 3.5 on Mint and Firefox 3.5 on Windows XP
Office: Open Office on both Mint and Windows XP
Main OS: For business use Windows XP sp3+
Video: nVidia 6000 and 7200 without fans (fans quit running too soon)
Hard Drives: For OSs on two computers on OCZ SSDs. All data drives are 7200 rpm Western Digital or Seagate. Backup drives are both Western Digital or Seagate USB.

Mint is the best OS so far, but Windows XP is essential to my business.

Past Linux versions:
Mandrake 8 to 10, Kubuntu, Mardriva 2008.1 and 2009, Mint 66 XFCE.

Now using Mint 7 KDE on my laptop and the family PC. I also installed it for my father, and suggested a friend who uses Kubuntu should consider it.

Happy, apart from an issue with xorg (high CPU, I have asked in the hardware forum so I hope it can be resolted).

Everything is fairly standard with me I'm afraid..

Operating System/Distribution: Linux Mint 7 Gloria
OS Version: Main edition
Kernel version: 2.6.28-11-generic
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment: Gnome (I've tried them all.. Gnome is the best for me at the moment)
Dock: None. Started with AWN. Got tired of it's quirks and switched to docky. Now I prefer minimalism, so none.
Conky: Always, usually two or three different configs running at once :)
Browser: Firefox 3.0 - Will probably switch to Chromium eventually
IM: Pidgin
Other OS's used: Dual booting with Vista, which I only use when it is an absolute necessity.

Kernel version: 2.6.28-11-generic
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment: Gnome
Dock: None
Conky: No
Browser: Firefox 3.0

Other OS's used: Look below. I use what works best for me.

A second drive with near identical Mint 7 OS in case the primary ever fails.

One drive with Ubuntu 8.04 for a couple applications that will not run in Mint 7 Gnome.

Two drives with near identical Mint 6 Gnome OS. I will use these when we get Mint 8 or 9. I will see. This way I do not mess up a working OS.

A Acer Aspire wireless laptop with Mint 7 Gnome. Same as above.

A backup desktop, same as above. Only two hard drives.

A Asus wirelss mini laptop running the default Xandros OS for light weight traveling.

Operating System/Distribution: Linux Mint, Puppy
OS Version: 7 'Gloria', Puppy 4.1
Kernel version: Linux (what else?) 2.6.28-11-generic for "Gloria" and for Puppy.
Windows Manager/Desktop Environment: default Gnome &tc.; Xfce with JWM for Puppy
Dock:No
Conky: Never in front of witnesses
Browser:Firefox 3.0 and Opera 10 (even after I said I didn't want to update, it happened anyway); Seamonkey when I'm on Puppy.
IM: I have successfully resisted so far.
Other OS's used: I began with Live Puppy 3.01, made a couple of Slax CD's, and investigated PCLinuxOS, simplyMEPIS, Knoppix and Ubuntu HH, also through Live CD's. My wife and I now use Linux Mint 7 exclusively on this desktop, although her new Compaq laptop came infected with Vista Basic, which she is keeping for the time being. I carry a Puppy 4.1 CD with me, just in case I need to use her computer.
Other info: I have read everything I could get my hands on concerning Linux, and only some of it has sunk in. But I will stick with it until it does.

Logically, I would think that any of the Mint developers would be using the latest updated version of Mint? Make sense? I suppose they may be looking at the next Ubuntu testing stuff also, figuring out where Mint will be going next.

That is "logical" FedoraRefugee

I'm sure they are testing the new Karmic and looking to see where LinuxMint is going.

I am more interested in which Window Manager and Desktop Environment they each use?
And if they use the current newer version of LinuxMint or the LTS version?

Just a minor update to my computer Distros configuration.

On my older laptop, I am now running PuppyLinux 4.2.4 with OpenBox. Again I have totally deleted Windows-XP.

On my PC, I am still using Gnome in "Gloria" . . . but in Helena, I am considering Xfce or LXDE.

I don't think there's going to be an LXDE version of Mint anymore. But Xfce should continue. I tried the Xfce version of Gloria and liked it very much, but my wife felt the video was less smooth, so I went back to Gnome. (It didn't bother me, but I want to keep her happy, and she is very happy with Mint/Gnome.)

I will not immediately switch to Helena. Next development cycle I should be ready to Beta or even Alpha test, but I am more conservative with this system right now.

I have upgraded to 430 Puppy, but I keep a 412 CD around, too, both with retro kernels, which seem to work better for me. No version of Puppy 42x works for me. I stay with the Xfce desktop and JWM. I'm still intrigued by Puppy, and its peculiarities. I plan to analyze it deeply, one day.

I have since experimented with Debian 5 Lenny, Kubuntu, CrunchBang, and moonOS, but I still prefer Mint to all of them. I'm thinking about installing the Fluxbox version of Mint in a seperate partition of this computer.

I like the experience of the Openbox configured CrunchBang Linux, which is also Ubuntu based, but I am put off enough by the warnings of instability the developer issues with the system to avoid installing it for now.

And, one day I will endure the magical mystery tour of installing Slackware, just for the learning experience of it all. After all, no pain, no gain!
