MySQL and the EC

Postby nukm on Tue Oct 20, 2009 3:33 pm

Free Software lovers might be interesting in the following link concerning the acquisition of Sun by Oracle. http://keionline.org/ec-mysql The potential problems for Free are explained here. http://piana.eu/sun Sun is patent-rich and the patent trolls will have a field day if they begin to sell off patents.

The primary site http://www.groklaw.net/index.php provides much case review of ongoing litigation involving Free software. The current Psystar/Apple and various MS cases are explained with filed briefs.

Those of you in Europe that don't worry about patents can relax until Microsoft's call for an International patent standard becomes a present reality. The recent MS auction of 22 patents is also discussed, including the near miraculous rescue which avoided the patents going to trolls.

It is always thus: big fish eat little fish, or in the financial arena, those with leverage eat others (bigger or smaller), and get away with it
--it (buy out) is not based on any kind of common sense.

MySQL is certainly popular, but it isn't the only choice: PostgreSQL has been toiling away, and many would say it provides a more comprehensive DB
--even if Mysql sees itself as competitive

Then there is always sqlite, well for you know, light duty..

And various others..
