Peppermint OS

Someone mentioned at the DistroWatch comments section that a new distro is on the horizon.

From the PPA description at launchpad (https://launchpad.net/~kendalltweaver/+ ... peppermint):

...a fork of Lubuntu with an emphasis on cloud apps and using many configuration files sourced from Linux Mint. Peppermint uses Mozilla Prism to create single site browsers for easily accessing many popular web applications outside of the primary browser. Peppermint uses the LXDE desktop environment and focuses on being easy for new Linux users to find their way around in.

I should note that this project is the result of a friend and I having one too many at the bar one night back in January. The beta iso is 422 MB, default browser is Firefox and the default music player is Songbird. Mozilla Prism is heavily used throughout, and we have deals worked out with both Seesmic and Aviary for default applications in their respective departments. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out. We're US based, so no crazy awesome Mint quality multimedia out of the box (though we are an official Flash distributor so that much is taken care of).

If anyone here ends up downloading it, you'll probably immediately say something like: "well, this definitely looks like Kendall's work".

Please keep us informed on the progress of this new project. If it comes even moderately close to the jobs you did on Mint 8 Fluxbox and LXDE, it will be well worth downloading and installing even without the proprietary apps and codecs.

I will do so. I will say that we had three write-ups yesterday, two of which were from particularly major players in the tech blog industry and all of which were circulated around the blogosphere to a legitimately astounding degree. If nothing else, I can't help but be surprised at the initial reaction thus far.

The cloud computing stage is starting to get a bit crowded though, if you ask me, so if you want Peppermint to be a successful cloud-based Linux OS, it must have something that differentiates it from Jolicloud or Chrome(-ium) OS. Both of the above are easy-to-use, intuitive, and quite lightweight, so you're up against some tough competition.

Both of the above are easy-to-use, intuitive, and quite lightweight, so you're up against some tough competition.

The approach we're taking is a more "desktop oriented" approach to cloud computing. I've seen lots of people "like" Chrome, but be very turned off by the fact that it's basically just a browser. What we're trying to do is cover the middle ground between something like Mint and something like Chrome.

I really still would like to see it to have a small size though. Chrome OS was a disappointment for me. One needs a 1GB USB to test it on live. Even Jolicloud requires 701MB. But what's taking so much space?

We're not trying to mimic Chrome or Jolicloud, though we'll probably be in more competition with the latter. As mentioned, the Peppermint beta was 422 MB (the current build is 422.2 MB) so that much should make you happy.

I find this Interesting & I am interested to say the least.
I am a fan of LXDE & the speed it offers ( for those that do not know I heavily use a custom Mint LXDE x64 for my desktop ) .
Also I use xPUD, a similar OS ( Browser type, similar to Chromium, But not & way,way Faster ).

So my Questions would be,

1) So I am very curious as to how this OS will perform compared to the previous Distros that I mentioned ?

2) Where can I get this & or sign up to test this Peppermint Distro ?

It's much smaller and faster than Mint 8 and will be faster than Mint 9 LXDE, probably on par with what you'll see in Mint 9 Fluxbox. I haven't messed with xPUD so I can't comment there. It's not as fast as Chromium OS, but it's intended to be much more than just a browser.

What are you using for photo editor?
I found a nice one that uses flash.
With flash 10 you don't upload the image.

We worked out a deal with Aviary to include their image editor and audio editor by default. pixlr looks wicked cool so I may start shooting them some emails here in a couple of months when we look to release an updated iso. Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot guys. I'm glad you're liking it.

I'm not going to build versions with any other desktop environments. For one, I don't have time. Two, LXDE is the perfect fit here due to it's size and speed. Of course you're more than welcome to install Xfce on top of it.

I've downloaded it and I'm running it in a vm. I plan on installing it in my old Mac mini and (probably) an old AMD 64 bit based PC.

I didn't even know about this until I saw it linked in another thread today. I'm certainly interested. My MSI Wind U100 is running XP and UNR 10.04 at the moment, neither of which is particularly snappy. Although I have not done a proper fresh install of XP to clear out the OEM junkware they put on there. Only problem is battery life I guess, WiFi doesn't do it much good
