The motivation of Canonical is that Software Center will soon be peddling (selling) apps. At least, that is their stated intention. This Fall.

The feature of the GPL that the moochers have overlooked - devs being paid for their code and their apps. :lol:

That doesn't bother me in the least. I can't remember the last time I've installed a program via GUI anyway - not that I look down on those who do, it's just not for me. Aptitude (aptitude install/search/remove/purge/etc., not the curses GUI) is more my style.
