Just tested Celena. I really like Mint, but it doesn't like me. Every version I've tested, including XFCE (and Ubuntu, too), has tossed random graphic junk onto my screen. Very annoying. If I could figure out how to attach a picture to this note, I'd show you what I mean. I haven't found any minty solutions to that problem, other than "I've never heard of that; there must be something wrong with you/your computer/your ISO image."
So I tried PCLinuxOS, "the distro hopper-stopper" (which, when seen on a short browser tab says "the distro ho." Nice touch!) That thing really works without any weirdness. No screen junk. But here's the thing...KDE kind of gives me the willies. Hard to say why, exactly. Maybe I just don't like the letter "K." If I recall correctly, it seems to render text in a less attractive manner than Mint. To me, that's important. Call me crazy.
So I started thinking...could there be a Gnome-flavored PCLOS around somewhere? And lo, thusly I found PCLinuxOS Gnome 2.18 at http://www.linuxgator.org. That is one ugly website, let me tell you, but don't let that bother you. Check it out. I'm using that thing (via live CD) right now, and it's very nice so far...instead of fighting me, it jumped in my lap and started purring. (OK, not literally.) I understand another Gnomy PCLOS is in the works, but isn't there yet. (http://www.mypclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?board=68.0)
Anyhow, If anyone out there has been wondering what it would be like if Mint and PCLOS got married and had a baby, take a look at PCLinuxOS Gnome. It doesn't seem to be very well known at all. It deserves more attention.
I.
