...nice and light...(solved)
hi folks just wondering if there is a agreement in the linux world as re a fast lightweight Distro, is Puppy or DSL good or are there other quality lightweights out there worth checking out any feedback would be appreciated thank you...I would like to introduce my 13 year old daughter to linux by speeding up her oldish toshiba laptop using a light fast distro preferbly from live cd, or usb stick

Re: ...nice and light...
Do you have some specs for the laptop? Which CPU, how much memory, how big harddisk? Or at least a model name?
Re: ...nice and light...
Toshiba...hi sorry no spec, just hoping that puppy or dsl, will do the job from live cd, or usb. she shares laptop with her mum which has windows xp on it so dual booting is not an option by downloading onto hard drive hence the preference for live cd or usb bootable light os...
Re: ...nice and light...
DSL is a dead project, so look at Puppy or Tiny Core Linux instead if you want light weight. Puppy has a thousand derivatives as well, from super lightweight to rather bloated. Take your pick

Worth a look, imho

(I got a certificate warning from the HowTos link, it's okay to accept the exception, you can choose/click 'temporary' if you want, the certificate just needs to be renewed by Vector)

I used to use DSL but as the project is dead I am using Puppy on older computers, there are many options there.
Turbopup Extreme is simple but uses very little RAM, with only 32MB of RAM you can boot and use Gparted 0.3.3 to create a SWAP partition and move/shrink partitions:

Classic Pup 214X is a more complete choice for older computers: http://www.wisdom-seekers.com/puppy214x.html
BrowserLinux (366 v2) is good if all you need is a browser, Flash, music player and a pdf reader: http://www.browserlinux.com/version3.html
Wary Puppy works better with older hardware but has recent software: http://bkhome.org/wary/
You can always use an older version of Puppy but there are a few new distros that work well on older computers, in the end it will depend on what CPU and RAM you have on that computer:

ConnochaetOS: http://www.connochaetos.org/wiki/
antiX: http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Main_Page
Debian 5 or 6 LXDE (or Openbox, Fluxbox, etc): http://www.debian.org/
etc.
