Who says "Nothing comes cheap"? - There's LINUX

Post by arnabendu »

Yeah! That's right. There is LINUX. And it is not cheap, it's FREE. If you think that Windows is crap (though as per me, with all its vulnerabilities, XP is really good) and Mac is too costly to be considered, you can always opt for Linux. The best thing about Linux is not that it is free, but also it gives you choices, a whole bunch of them. If you don't like one distro, you can always look for another one. And there are many in the market - Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Fedora, Opensuse, PCLinuxOS , the names goes on. Apart from these big players, there are also quite a many, which are not so popular, but in no terms inefficient. Some of them are as good as the above giants. Regarding DE's, well, here also you have a good number of choices - Gnome, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, Openbox, E17 etc. If you think the new Gnome 3 with its shell is not what you are looking for and you want more of a conventional desktop, you can look into XFCE. XFCE will give you a feel somewhat like Gnome 2 and it is lightweight too. Again, if you find XFCE to be too simple, you can go for more eye-candy one, KDE; or you can even install both or even all of them. And the greatest thing about the DE's that they are quite compatible with one another. One DE's application runs without any problem on another. KDE's Amarok and K3B runs very smoothly on Gnome. So you don't need to worry much regarding that. Now comes the software part. For that only three letters for you - WoW! Just WoW! An incredible number of choices is offered by Linux when it comes to softwares. You want to burn a CD/DVD, you have K3B/Brasero. You want to watch movies, you have VLC that plays all types of media files. You listen to music via Exaile/Rhythmbox/Amarok. You need to edit pictures, use GIMP. You need something and there is always a software for you that can be used to do the work. Actually, the availability does not concerns only a single software, but plentiful of them. Again, choices. As mentioned before, the best thing about Linux is CHOICES. If one thing does not suit you, opt for another one. If that only does not feel you comfortable, look for another one and you will ultimately get what you need. So, who says that nothing comes cheap? There's LINUX!!
