Tell me more language software is Linux hostile

Postby ipernar on Sat Apr 07, 2012 10:58 pm

I tried to run this Windows based program multiple times. First I did it on a virtual XP machine, then on virtual windows 7 machine. Both time unsuccessful.

What happened was that I managed to install program, but I couldn't run it.

Then I tried to install it with wine, but failed again. Installer gave a simple reply "Installation has failed". Error message = http://oi39.tinypic.com/10x4x7n.jpg

What else can I say, basically it requires me to have a dual boot in order to run this software and that is not an option for me.

To make long story short, I'm quite frustrated now, it's 4:41 AM and I'm on my way to bed.

Lessons learned are following:

1. "Tell me more" will tell you nothing if you have a Linux machine
2. My father wasted his money
3. Proprietary software is often expensive and useless
4. Virtual Windows machines, both XP and 7, have not done their work
5. A lot of time can be wasted for nothing

Um... I guess I'll post a rebuttle or something. Windows apps aren't supposed to work on linux, because it's linux, not windows (you probably already know that). WINE is a workaround and often doesn't work. Knowing what the program is might be helpful. Dual booting is a pain, I agree. If it doesn't install on a windows virtual machine, I blame Windows. I'm sorry your father wasted his money on some unknown program, but it doesn't look like you want help, you just seem to want to tell us about how the unknown program didn't work. Time is wasted extremely easily. I once reformatted a really old windows xp machine for my sister. It took me hours to get it reformatted - it was SO slow. When I finally got it working, it didn't accept WPA2 or WPA passwords because it was service pack 0. I needed so many updates, which you download from the internet, to connect to the internet. The machine was a desktop and was in the basement so it was pretty much impossible to connect to the internet. After 3 days I figured out how to install a program for WPA/WPA2 passwords onto a USB and bring it to her house to install the many service packs which took hours. A lot of tech things take a while, especially windows-related things  . Anyways, I'd be happy to help in any way I can if you say what the program is.

Though older, the foreign language courses developed by the US government are in the public domain. Could be a good, and free, way to start with a new language? http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php Works perfectly with Linux (so no need to enable proprietary software hustlers), just PDFs with the course and audio files for the pronunciation and tests. There are probably more of these freely available online. This was the first Google hit on my search
