If you're honest you'd have to admit that this is not just "Hrvatski" ... The reason that "Bosnian", "Serbian" and "Croatian" are regarded as "separate" languages are political ones, not linguistic ones.

Why not follow the standards of the Tribunal in Den Haag and just call the language what it really should be called? BCS: Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian.

Croatian uses a regular latin alphabet-based written form whereas Serbian uses Cyrillic. I can surely understand the spoken language of all 3 but I do not read Cyrillic.

Anyone is welcome to post here as long as they use the latin alphabet-based written form.

You are correct in that the difference is mainly political but what I have seen in the Linux community, those political differences are set aside.

My only problem is that I can't read Cyrillic as I was born and raised in Canada and learned the Croatian language in latin alphabet-based written form which is the standard for Croatian.

I have in the past communicated with both Croatian and Serbian linux users through email.

Clem can go ahead and change the heading. I have no issues with that but I just can't respond to posts that are written in an alphabet I can't read - lol.

Well, Serbs and Montenegrians shouldn't have no trouble whatsoever to write in Latin letters. I think with some small efforts on all sides (just as wonderfully demonstrated here) we should really get along well here

The differences between them are similar to the differences between Canadian English, British English and American English. All are understood but there are different words for different things and spelling is different as well.

They are close enough that it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things though.

Take German for example: The differences between standard German in Germany ("High German" -- Hochdeutsch) on one hand and Austrian German and then Swiss German (Schwyzerdüütsch) on the other hand, are simply put: drastic!

As a matter of fact, every Swiss German speaker can and will understand a High German speaker without problem, but the other way round it doesn't work: No German can understand a Swiss German speaker, unless the Swiss switches to what he considers being "correct" German (which then still is full of Swiss expressions, so called "Helvetisms" a German will still not understand). With Austrian it's similar. And yet despite these drastic differences (and then some!!) all these people consider themselves as being German speakers, and they consider their languages being just regional dialects of one and the same language: German!

The differences between Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian are microscopic in comparison.

If we really count every dialect as a separate language I'd be a freakin' Einstein: I speak Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian, Montenegrian, at least five variations of Swiss German, Swiss French, proper French, American English, British English, Canadian English ...

Absolutely!! As as Serb you can even go on vacation in Croatia (been there, done that ... and I liked it ) without switching your "language"

Most of the Serbs I've corresponded with are right in Belgrade or here in Canada. I work with one who is married to a Croatian woman. They moved here when the war started. They actually lived in Bosnia.

To be truthful, a lot of the dialect that I grew up with is in proper terms considered a blend of Serbian and Croatian. Many of the words I use are more considered proper Serbian than Croatian. The way I look at it is if I understand you and you understand me, then we are fine.

I've noticed that the political BS is usually left behind when talking in technical circles like Linux.

For me, I think we need to move forward and not backwards.

When hell broke loose we ditched our old passports and citizenship. Being citizen of a state that no longer existed ("Socialist Foederative Republic of Yugoslavia" -- SFRJ) or counting yourself as members of a nation that apparently never existed ("Yugoslavs") had little value to us. Being a Swiss has so many countless advantages

Becoming a Swiss citizen was relatively easy for me as I was already born here. Being born here doesn't grant you Swiss citizenship automagically but it's nontheless a big bonus if you apply for citizenship later on as an adult.

Hvala za dobrodoslicu!

Nego, sta da pitam kad sve radi odlicno? Delimicno se i salim, jer nisam sve probao, ali moram reci da je Linux Mint 2.2, code name "Bianca", koji je (vidi koincidencije!) izasao bas 02-22, "ljubav moga zivota" i to na prvi pogled! A do sada sam probao razne Linuxe, u zadnje 2 godine nije manje od 50.

Vise volim KDE, ali moram sa zaljenjem da konstatujem da ga njegov tim u zadnje vreme sve vise menja, i nekako priblizava prema GNOME, pa ako je vec tako, onda cu preci na original GNOME. Izuzetno mi se svidja sto je sada sve u jednom panelu, nalik na KDE i nakon nekog vremena sam shvatio da vise ni ne primecujem da radim u GNOME!

Clem ce imati i KDE za nas. Nebi smijelo biti bas tako dugo dok on ga pripremi da mozemo probati ga.

KDE je puno bolji na "network" strani osobito ako imas Samba server ili slicno.

Meni se svidja KDE vise nego Gnome pa sam dela mali skript sto ti napravi cd ili dvd od vasega sistema. Zove se "remastersys" i Clem ce snjime KDE verziju delati. More se naci naj ovaj forum ako ti se zanima.

Izvini mi ako moje pisanje nije bas najbolje ali ne govorim puno ni pisem od kad mi baka umrijela. Ide sad na 10 godina da smo bez nje.

Govorim ponekad s ocom i majkom a drukcije sve po engleski.
