Remastersys 2.0-5 released - Hardy Heron direct install now

Postby Fragadelic on Fri Apr 25, 2008 11:16 pm

I have updated remastersys to 2.0-5 with the following changes:

2.0-5 - added removal of /var/crash/* files so there aren't any crash reports
- added proper check for arch for the disk defines file
- added removal of the 70-persistent* files from the temp etc/udev/rules.d folder
- added support for 8.04 for direct install option on grub boot of the livecd
- fixed the issue where the Install icon stayed on the desktop for dist mode
- added check for where Linux Mint puts stage2_eltorito
- added version to remastersys gui info tab
- removed Desktop icons for remastersys

For those that don't already have it handy, here is the repo info for you /etc/apt/sources.list file.

# Remastersys

This announcement post is being done from a remastered Ubuntu 8.04 install that was directly installed from the cd like the original Ubuntu livecd!

Here is the thread about it on the official forum:

I only heard about Remastersys a couple of days ago and tried it a fresh install of Ubuntu. I use an Ubuntu live CD to fix my friend's windows boxes (cause they keep breaking them) but had to download the packages I needed ad hoc.

This is a great project and I've already made a great replacement CD with all the stuff I usually use. The only hitch is that I was hoping that the desktop environment for the only user on the system would be the default desktop in the finished live cd.

I was trying this because I thought I could leave icons on the desktop for a non Linux user to just click like windows. These were for things like gparted and a gui I found frontend I found for dd. I also changed the color scheme and back ground just to be different. Anyway I thought I'd teach a man to fish by just giving the new live disks to my friends and getting my Saturdays back.

When the disk finalized the desktop was the standard clean install one except for the two remastersys icons. So I'm guessing, is there no easy way to make a customized desktop with remaster sys? If not I can live with the current tool. It's still great and I'm glad you put it together.

Thanks,

Dzen

Remastersys doesn't do anything other than pack up your system into a livecd/dvd. It is up to you to make your changes globally rather than just for the user you are logged in as.

In gnome, the gconf tool holds many of these settings and after that, the /etc/skel folder is the place for specific things you want every user to have. The folder /etc/skel/Desktop is where you should put your desktop icons in order for them to be there for the liveuser and every user after install. /etc/skel is copied for each new user that is created.

Thanks!

I will play around with this and see what I can come up with. But I'll VM to test from now on. I was so excited to see how my new disk worked out that I just burned and booted it.

Thanks again.

I'd like to use ubuntu but I need a remaster (like pclos) that boots straight into compiz having found my nvidia graphics driver.
I'ts the only thing missing from remastersys.

Not a remastersys problem. The ubuntu casper scripts disable nvidia and fglrx kernel drivers.

Perfect timing, I've been wanting to back up my current system so I can try out the latest beta of mint. As always Frag, great work!

Hi there Frag

Quick question - in a Remastersys installed system (not a full backup) I find that I can change the login prefs to have me logged in automatically. I make the change in System -> Administration -> Login Window but they don't stick. Is there anything I can do about this?

Cheers

I'm not sure to tell you the truth. I haven't used gnome in a long time.

When you say it doesn't stick, do you mean it works once and then it doesn't again or it doesn't work at all.

Doesn't work at all. I can tick the box, click close, but when I open Login Window again my changes have gone. It's as if somehow the file recording login settings has become read-only, although I need the root password to get this far

An odd one, annoying, but not a deal breaker at all for me :)
