cd filesystem missing error

Postby hellfeuer on Fri Jan 18, 2008 5:13 pm

I'm running ubuntu 7.10 on vmware workstation 6.
I tried using remastersys to make a distribution, but it gives the following errors (here /home/remastersys was the mount point for a virtual drive):

It appears as though you may have run out of space on the drive or partition where /home/remastersys is.

Typically you need about 2.5 times the final iso size so lets say you end up with a 1Gig iso file, you will need more than 2.5 Gig of free space to start. There is no way to find out for sure as different files will compress a different amount.

Doing it in vmware, is the virtual drive size fixed or dynamically expanding. Typically you will need at least about 12 Gig or so for a normal install and remastersys.

I really dont think thats the answer. I tried twice, once with a 10gb and then a 14gb drive. my installed size is only 3.4 gb.

Also, first, the errors start showing up really soon, (especially the no such file or directory ones) I dont think there would have been time to fill up a 14gb drive.
more objectively, df -h gives only 164mb used on that drive, so unless remastersys is cleaning up(again, no time) something else is wrong

Check your permissions on the mounted virtual drive. The messages are showing you that it can't create the directories needed. You need to address the permissions issues and remastersys will work fine.

I use it all the time in Virtual Box without a problem.

i did a sudo chmod 777 /home/remastersys before running remastersys

should I also chown?

I would check the permissions on the mount. The script is run as root so ownership isn't an issue.

What is the output of "mount" on the system. Especially where the /home/remastersys mount is concerned.

mount gives:
/dev/sdb1 on /home/remastersys type ext3 (rw)

and anyway, i tried reading writing to /home/remastersys and it works fine (even without sudo)

thanks for your patience btw!

Can you post the output of "ls -lR /home/remastersys"

I'd like to see what folders if any were created to see if the problem could be with mkdir or with rsync having some sort of issue with that virtual drive?

Code: Select all
/home/remastersys:
total 36
drwx------ 2 root      root      16384 2008-01-19 10:35 lost+found
-rw-r--r-- 1 root      root          0 2008-01-19 10:44 passwdrestore
-rw-r--r-- 1 root      root       4118 2008-01-19 10:49 remastersys.log
-rw-r--r-- 1 hellfeuer hellfeuer     4 2008-01-19 11:31 test
-rw-r--r-- 1 root      root       2362 2008-01-19 10:44 varexc
-rw-r--r-- 1 root      root       2932 2008-01-19 10:44 varexc.tmp

It also says "ls: /home/remastersys/lost+found: Permission denied" but i sudo'd and found that lost+found is empty

hmmm - there are no subdirectories created. Can you do an "ls -l /home"

What filesystem did you use for the virtual drive? ext3 is preferred. I know some people have had issues with reiserfs.

I'm using ext3 (on both disks)

Is there any way of increasing the main filesystem size so that remastersys is on the same filesystem as the rest of it?

I haven't heard of anyone using a second virtual filesystem and it appears as though mkdir doesn't want to create the folders needed.

Can you try to do the following and then post the results?

sudo mkdir /home/remastersys/dummysys

ls -l /home/remastersys
