Complete Linux newb and already can't figure something out.

Postby Nikter on Sat May 12, 2012 5:55 pm

Hi there everyone. Hopefully the issue I have encountered is a common and easily correctable one. I just installed Linux mint 12 on my windows 7 machine because I wanted to learn and become familiar with the OS. The install ran from an iso 64 bit image burned to DVD, within windows 7 and everything seemed to install perfectly. I installed it on my second TB hard drive separated from the Windows install.

However, upon reboot, and selecting Linux mint to boot up, the screen seems to go through a boot screen where it must be detecting all of the hardware the computer is using and it always freezes up when detecting my Thermaltake keyboard. I can't get it to load passed this point. This is the last message it gives.

Can anyone help or am Imaking a normal newb mistake?

Hello Nikter, although not a definitive answer, I 'll make a suggestion as a fellow 'relative noob' ........ :)

The keyboard's probably a decent hint, is it wireless or a usb? (i'm not familiar with gaming keyboards) some fresh installs of windows don't take too well to anything but a PS2 type keyboard, had this in the past on formats/fresh installs when a usb/w-less wouldn't let me in the bios, so it may be worth a try to plug in an older keyboard if you have one around ? . . . . . got to be worth a go until someone comes along with a bit more technical know-how :)

not too sure about this one, but is your TB hardrive external or internal? There can be issues with installing onto an external HD

Sorry for the delay in my response.

Daveinuk,

The keyboard and mouse are both Thermaltake USB. I, unfortunately, do not have a PS2 Keyboard to use in its place. However, I did unplug both the keyboard and mouse right after I select Linux Mint to boot into. I got the same scrolling messages on the screen and it again froze while detecting something. If I remember correctly, the item it froze on was something internal, however as soon as I plugged the keyboard back in, it showed that it detected it and froze just as before. I know this sounds confusing without a screen shot to use as reference.

Admint,

The OS is installed on an internal SATA TB Hard Drive.

Does anyone else see the screen scroll through all these messages when booting into Linux Mint 12?

I think it freezes on something else, but just happens to have detected the keyboard right before the freeze happens.

So is the only option I have, is to uninstall and reinstall? Is it possible that Linux Mint isn't compatible with some Intel Motherboards or some other hardware? I really wanted to get some experience with Linux but if it is this temperamental with standard hardware, and this difficult to troubleshoot, I just might have to use another version I guess.

Intel motherboard shouldn't be a problem. Did the Mint CD/DVD boot fine? Then your installed system should work as well. Indeed, a reinstall can probably fix it.
