[SOLVED] GUI User account and groups

Postby DiSTuRBeD on Wed May 30, 2012 12:33 am

Hello,

For VirtualBox (Shared Folders functionality) I need to add my user to the vboxusers group.

I remember that in Mint 9 you had a gui to do this, in Mint 13 this seems to have disappeared.
Since you want to make Linux easy, and don't want to hide the more difficult stuff, why don't you let this gui re-appear?

For now, if someone can pinpoint me to the right groupadd command, that's fine too, but still, newbie users aren't supposed to have to use the terminal.

Kind regards,
DiS

I'm assuming Mint 13 Cinnamon since the MATE edition has the appropriate tool already installed.

You can install the gnome-system-tools package using Synaptic or the Software Manager. That will give you the Users and Groups applet.

Until then, you can simply type into a terminal:

Code: Select all
sudo adduser DiSTuRBeD vboxusers

Remember to log out then log in again to gain the new group permissions (no need to reboot).

You can install the GUI applet:
$ sudo apt-get gnome-system-tools
and after installation You will find it under Administration > Users and Groups
This should have been there since the beginning...

Bummer... I installed gnome-system-tools and it added nothing to my menus... how else does one add themselvs to a group so as to use the usb ports in virtual box?

The command I used with MATE to add user to vboxusers was “sudo usermod -aG vboxusers username”. I ran this in admin not user, because I now have an admin account to install software and a user account to surf.

I got the menu item Administration > Users and Groups to appear after rebooting the system.
