Using the repository is the best way to install Software. http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu is a guide to adding the repository for Wine. After following that go into Synaptic and install wine that way.

I would start another topic for your audio as that is a separate issue.

Yeah just stay in the repository and download a thousand files maybe one of them will actually work? Poor advice for wine or heavy duty programs! Get them straight from the horses mouth(source). Of course with wine it doesn't matter cause it is not that great of a program from what I have seen! The developers are just feeding off all the issues and try some stuff here and there and get something else to function. Probably in another 20 years Wine will be good. For now it is a roulette wheel. Might work, might not! My money is on people getting back to developing programs for LInux and get off the cross dressing(cross-platform) cause simply put too many stability issues and OS's are not running well because of it! Is a real shame as developers push to work with wine and stop caring about the actual Linux functions! Least Chinese developers keep appraised on LInux and my money is on them to beat wine or develope Linux further!

it is to not have this problem that people stick to their repos.

And wine is already a lot better than it was. I am able to play two windows game, one of them with heavy graphics, on linux because of wine. don't blame wine if you don't know how to configure it

dude, if the developrs stop caring about the actual linux functions, we won't have linux. it has grown because of the wonderful developers. to put some work into wine doesn't mean people have stopped caring about linux. and linux is a good idea and helps people who are sticking with windows just for the sake of playing games to make the switch to the amazing world of linux
