Missing letters on new Mint Install

Postby jonezy187 on Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:30 pm

I have just installed Mint on a new PC build. I ran all the updates and upon restart letters are missing in the desktop and menus. I've attached a screenprint but have no idea why it is like this. If you look along the top you will see the date and time is missing along with part of my login name and at the bottom the Menu is totally missing. Within the menu all the applications have randomly missing letters.

I've done a quick google and some people are saying is an Nvidia update but I don't know how to fix this. Can anyone help?

Jonezy:

Do you have a Nvidia video card/adapter?

No, I'm using the built in graphics of the mobo. But couldn't find any results in my search that didn't reference nvidia.

Have you run
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update
?

Ctrl+Alt+T should still give you a terminal to do so.

Let us know...

Looks like it is the ATI proprietary driver that is causing the problem? Anyone else had the same thing?

Yes!

On two different machines. I don't know what it is exactly, but it would appear the proprietary drivers do not work well with Gnome 3. (I am unsure about KDE, Xfce etc...) I am using the bog standard open source drivers for one machine and the built-in Intel graphics in the i5 processor for the other. Both work OK.
