Cannot open programmes with a view

Postby sunnyd47 on Mon Apr 30, 2012 8:33 am

New install of the latest Mint distro.

When I open a programme such as "Thunderbird" or "VLC" I get nothing showing on screen, I get the normal lower task bar indication stating that it is open. When I right click on the indicator, I have three choices "Close", "Minimise", "Maximise" but clicking these do not do anything immediately, it takes many clicks on various choices to actually open the programme on screen.
This also happens when I try to open a music file with VLC, it plays but cannot see the video, right cicking the indicator gives the three options above but does not have any effect.
Any help appreciated.

I take it thats a no then, you do not know the answer or have any deffinate advise of where to look specifically within the forum. Ah well, back to windows for stability out of the box.
I had heard great things about Linux mint but to have immediate problems out of the box is very dissapointing. Is there not a stable version for modern computers available for a fresh install such as mine? or is Linux mint mainly for old computers with little ram?
